Regional variations in police-reported crime: Comparing Canada and the United States

Using data from the Uniform Crime Reporting programs in Canada and the United States, this study examines the prevalence of police-reported crime for specific regions within each country and how these patterns may vary between the two countries. Besides examining broader geographic regions, it also compares police-reported crime at more specific levels of geography, namely between urban and rural areas, as well as across the largest metropolitan areas.

This comparative analysis of crime trends in Canada and United States uses police-reported data from the Uniform Crime Reporting programs in both countries, focusing on trends from 1998 to 2023. In doing so, this study provides a better understanding of the similarities and differences in patterns in police-reported crime for the two neighbouring countries over time, as well as insight into the characteristics of crimes in Canada and the United States (e.g., use of firearms in violent crime).

Health services in a patient’s own official language: Associations with proximity, region and sociodemographic factors

Softening the blow of discrimination: The role of social connections in mitigating the harms associated with racism and discrimination

Using the 2023-2024 Survey Series on People and their Communities (SSPC), this study provides a profile of the self-reported experiences of discrimination against racialized people in Canada, looking at the prevalence and nature of discrimination based on race or ethnicity, and the risk factors associated with it. It then examines the relationship of discrimination with wellbeing and perceptions of Canadian society, and how these possible effects are mitigated by victims’ connections with family and friends.

Concern about misinformation: Connections to trust in media, confidence in institutions, civic engagement, and hopefulness

Consuming user-generated videos and its impact on wellbeing

It also looks at the relationship between consumption of UGVs and select quality of life indicators. It situates the activity of watching UGVs alongside other Internet activities, as well as the amount of time spent on the Internet. Finally, this study sheds light on the identified risks and benefits associated with going online to watch UGVs.

Workforce renewal in health occupations

Data from the 2021 Census of Population are used to better understand the extent to which younger workers could replace those approaching retirement age. The role of immigration in mitigating the impacts of an aging health workforce is also explored.

Use of official languages at home: An analysis based on the academic path of graduates in Canada

This study examines the language spoken at home based on the academic path and language composition of couples. In particular, the study deals with the adoption or retention of a minority official language in Canada—i.e., English in Quebec and French in the other provinces and territories—as the language spoken most often at home. The study is based on data from the linkage between the Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) and the 2021 Census of Population, as well as information from the Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials, and looks specifically at graduates who were 18 to 30 years of age in 2021. Since the language spoken at home is the language that is likely to be passed on to the next generation, the retention or adoption of minority languages at home is important for their preservation.

Unfair treatment, racism and discrimination in community sports in Canada

Cost-related avoidance of oral health services

Using data from the Canadian Oral Health Survey, this study describes the characteristics of individuals who avoided visiting an oral health professional or who avoided recommended dental treatment because of cost. It explores how cost-related avoidance in the previous 12 months varies across age, gender and equity-seeking groups. The article also provides a detailed overview of the role of income and dental insurance in cost-related avoidance of oral health services.
