A favourite of students and researchers, the profiles provide statistical information on more than 6,000 cities, towns, villages and Aboriginal communities, 137 metropolitan areas, and now 139 health regions across Canada.

Transition from SIC to NAICS - Manufacturing industries
Data collected from the Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) are now classified according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). This classification system replaces the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC); 1997 is the last year for which data are released on a SIC basis.

Registered Retirement Savings Plan contributions
Contributions to registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) rebounded to their second highest level ever in 1999. A record 6,207,000 taxfilers contributed to an RRSP during the 1999 tax year, up 1.4% from the previous year. They contributed $27.8 billion, a 2.6% increase from 1998 (after adjusting for inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index).

Canadians can obtain a wealth of information about their federal electoral district, free of charge, on Statistics Canada's website (www.statcan.ca). The profiles appear in an easy-to-use format, in both English and French. The Agency is making available statistical profiles of all 301 federal electoral districts. The Federal electoral district profile includes data from the 1996 Census of Population and a mapping feature.

Employer-sponsored registered pension plans (RPPs) remain an integral part of the retirement saving system for Canadians, although their coverage has been declining throughout the 1990s. At the end of 1998, 41% of paid workers were covered by RPPs, down from 45% in 1992.
