What are some of the possible solutions? Last fall, Statistics Canada invested in a Big Data Pilot project to answer some of these questions. This was the first business survey project of its kind. This paper will cover some of the lessons learned from the Big Data Pilot Project using Smart Meter Data.

This article gives an overview of adaptive design elements introduced to the PASS panel survey in waves four to seven. The main focus is on experimental interventions in later phases of the fieldwork. These interventions aim at balancing the sample by prioritizing low-propensity sample members. In wave 7, interviewers received a double premium for completion of interviews with low-propensity cases in the final phase of the fieldwork. This premium was restricted to a random half of the cases with low estimated response propensity and no final status after four months of prior fieldwork. This incentive was effective in increasing interviewer effort, however, led to no significant increase in response rates.

Using data from the 2012 Incident-based Uniform Crime Reporting Survey (UCR2.2), this Juristat article examines police-reported cybercrime in Canada. Analysis is presented on the number of cybercrimes reported by police services covering 80% of the population of Canada, as well as the characteristics of incidents, victims, and persons accused of cyber-related violations. These findings are supplemented with self-reported data on cyber-bullying, based on results from the 2009 General Social Survey (GSS) on Victimization.

This Juristat bulletin examines characteristics and trends of verdicts of not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder (NCRMD) in adult criminal courts. The number and rate of cases over time, type of offence, age and sex of the accused, and case completion time are described. Data are from the Integrated Criminal Court Survey (ICCS), administered by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics at Statistics Canada. This article examines completed cases where at least one charge received a final decision of NCRMD, in ten reporting Canadian provinces and territories from 2005/2006 to 2011/2012.

This paper provides an overview of the productivity program at Statistics Canada and a brief description of Canada’s productivity performance. The paper defines productivity and the various measures that are used to investigate different aspects of productivity growth. It describes the difference between partial productivity measures (such as labour productivity) and a more complete measure (multifactor productivity) and the advantages and disadvantages of each. The paper explains why productivity is important. It outlines how productivity growth fits into the growth accounting framework and how this framework is used to examine the various sources of economic growth. The paper briefly discusses the challenges that face statisticians in measuring productivity growth. It also provides an overview of Canada’s long-term productivity performance and compares Canada to the United States—both in terms of productivity levels and productivity growth rates.
