    Canada's oil reserves are concentrated in three Canadian provinces: Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Oil prices received by Canadian oil producers more than doubled between 2001 and 2008. The proportion of young men employed in the oil industry differs markedly across provinces and education levels. Taken together, these facts suggest that the increases in world oil prices observed between 2001 and 2008 may have induced cross-educational and cross-provincial variation in labour demand and male wage growth in Canada. Using data from the Canadian Labour Force Survey, this study exploits this variation in wage growth in order to estimate the elasticity of young men's labour market participation and school enrollment with respect to wages.

    This article examines changes since 1976 in a number of indicators that show the aging of Canadian workers and a growing number of workers delaying retirement. The increase in delayed retirement is consistent with an increase in the employment rate of older workers, however, it is at odds with statistics indicating that the average retirement age has remained surprisingly stable. This article attempts to reconcile the two apparently contradictory trends using a new expected working-life indicator.

    This paper discusses in detail issues dealing with the technical aspects of designing and conducting surveys. It is intended for an audience of survey methodologists.

    In large-scale surveys, it is almost guaranteed that some level of non-response will occur. Generally, statistical agencies use imputation as a way to treat non-response items. A common preliminary step to imputation is the formation of imputation cells. In this article, the formation of these cells is studied using two methods. The first method is similar to that of Eltinge and Yansaneh (1997) in the case of weighting cells and the second is the method currently used in the Canadian Labour Force Survey. Using Labour Force data, simulation studies are performed to test the impact of the response rate, the response mechanism, and constraints on the quality of the point estimator in both methods.
