This working paper presents a methodology to measure remoteness at the community level. The method takes into account some of the recent literature on the subject, as well as new computational opportunities provided by the integration of official statistics with data from non-official statistical sources. The approach that was used in the computations accounts for multiple points of access to services; it also establishes a continuum between communities with different transportation infrastructures and connectivity while at the same time retaining the information on the community transportation infrastructures in the database. In addition, a method to implement accessibility measures to selected services is also outlined and a sample of accessibility measures are computed.

The 1991 to 2001 Canadian census mortality follow-up study tracked a 15% sample of adults aged 25 or older. This study examined mortality among Métis, non-Status Indians and non-Aboriginal adults aged 25 to 74. Age-standardized rates of potential years of life lost were calculated, based on the number of person-years at risk before age 75.

This study describes and contrasts mortality patterns among Métis and Registered Indian adults with those of the population of Canada as a whole.

This article uses a geographic-based approach to estimate life expectancy in areas where at least 33% of residents were Inuit. The data are from the Canadian Mortality Database and the Census of Canada.

As the century draws to a close, there are many topics of interest involving Canada's aboriginal peoples: self-government, land claims, the environment, the criminal justice system, urbanization, the labour market, education, etc. However, one topic receives little attention but could have a major impact on how the others will develop: the demographic growth of aboriginal populations.
