Educators who are part of Indigenous children’s own communities can play an important role in providing them with early learning experiences that reflect their cultural heritage and traditions. This study examines the sociodemographic and employment characteristics of early learning and child care (ELCC) workers who are First Nations people, Métis or Inuit. Using 2016 long-form Census data, two occupational groups were studied – early childhood educators and assistants (ECEA) and child care providers (CCP). Comparisons were also made with non-Indigenous ELCC workers in the same occupational groups.

Harvesting activities such as hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering wild plants have been part of Indigenous peoples' ways of living for millennia. They have endured despite the impact of colonization, including the impacts of residential schools, relocation to permanent settlements, the wage economy, and other constraints. This paper examines trends in harvesting activities, specifically hunting, fishing or trapping and gathering wild plants berries, among First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit using four cycles of the Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS; 2001, 2006, 2012 and 2017). It also explores self-reported barriers to participation in harvesting activities and associated factors.

This is the third fact sheet in the series using information from the 2001 Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS). The purpose of this fact sheet is to provide information on the leisure time activities of Inuit children (ages 4 to 14). Specific activities include: sport participation, art or music activities, clubs or groups, cultural activities, time spent with elders, and sedentary activities. Results are presented for all Inuit children and specifically for those in the four Inuit land claim settlement regions in the Arctic: Nunatsiavut in northern Labrador, the territory of Nunavut, Nunavik in northern Quebec, and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region in the Northwest Territories. Where possible, results for Inuit children are compared to those of all Canadian children.

Previous research has shown that child care has an impact on children's social and developmental outcomes. However, little is known about child care for First Nations, Métis and Inuit children. The purpose of this study is to describe non-parental child care for First Nations children living off reserve, Métis, and Inuit children in Canada, including the cultural aspects within the care environment. In addition, the availability of culturally-relevant activities and language spoken in care were examined as predictors of children's outcomes.

Participation in extracurricular activities, including both sports and cultural activities, can be associated with positive benefits for children. The purpose of the current study was to examine participation in sports and cultural activities for Inuit, Métis and off-reserve First Nations children aged 6 to 14 years. Socio-demographic factors including the child's basic characteristics, cultural factors and family characteristics were also examined to determine any associations with participation in sports and cultural activities.
