Canadian System of Environmental-Economic Accounts - Ecosystem Accounts

Ecosystem accounts are based on the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting - Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA-EA) framework, which was adopted as an international statistical standard by the United Nations Statistical Commission in March 2021. This framework complements, and builds on, the accounting for environmental assets described in the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting Central Framework (SEEA-CF), which was adopted as an international standard in 2012.

Description: This article presents data on Indigenous Peoples and their experiences with wildfires, along with spatial data on forest fires and air quality from 2023. The analysis integrates results from the 2024 Survey Series on First Nations People, Métis and Inuit - Emergency Preparedness and Extreme Weather with 2021 Census Indigenous population data, alongside spatial data on forest fires and air quality from 2023. This analytical article uses maps, charts and tables to show findings, including burned-area estimates and air quality index values, to provide a comprehensive overview of wildfire experiences among Indigenous populations in Canada.

  • Table: 16-510-X2026001
Description: This product contains a raster dataset that represents the degree of direct landscape modifications to Canada's terrestrial and freshwater extent (excluding the Great Lakes) circa 2020 at 30 m spatial resolution. It is an index with values ranging from 0 to 100. Higher scores represent progressively more altered or intensively-used ecosystems and lower scores represent less altered and more naturally intact ecosystems. The main purpose of the dataset is to help measure ecosystem condition to support ecosystem accounting. It was created through the integration of multiple spatial datasets, including land cover and linear feature datasets.

  • Table: 16-510-X2025005
Description: This product contains reference files that define the nested spatial grid system used by the Census of Environment's Statistical Ecosystem Register. The reference grids are available as 11 GeoTIFF files, one for each resolution, as well as a well-known text representation of the projected coordinate reference system (.prj file). The GeoTIFF files contain only placeholder values of 1 (stored as a compressed unsigned 1-bit integer, to minimize the size of the files). These files can be used as templates for integrating data from multiple sources into a single gridded spatial reference system, thus enabling a common approach for related spatial data products.

  • Articles and reports: 16-201-X201300011875
    Description:

The article "Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada" presents preliminary results achieved through a two-year interdepartmental project to develop experimental ecosystem accounts and the required statistical infrastructure. It provides an overview of ecosystem accounting and valuation and presents several measures of the quantity and quality of ecosystems and ecosystem goods and services (EGS). These measures focus on land cover, human landscape modification, ecosystem potential of the boreal forest, biomass extraction, marine and coastal EGS, and wetland EGS. The report also includes a case study on the Thousand Islands National Park exploring monetary valuation of EGS and concludes with a research agenda for future work on this topic.

Description: This product contains contiguously settled area (CSA) boundaries for a subset of Canadian population centres for 2010 and 2020 with user documentation. The CSA boundaries are derived from land cover data and represent the geographic extent of settled areas based on their physical footprint on the landscape. The boundaries can be used for reference, mapping and spatial analysis of settled areas and urban ecosystems. The CSA boundaries are created and maintained under the umbrella of the Census of Environment, and will support Statistics Canada's ecosystem accounting efforts.
