Description: The Rural Canada Housing Profiles (RCHP) 2023 provides tables on housing in rural and small town (RST) Canada. Comprising five tables, the RCHP database addresses themes such as residential building permits; investment in residential building construction; residential property characteristics; occupied private dwelling characteristics; and private household characteristics. The tables were developed using data from several Statistics Canada programs including the Building Permits Program, Investment in Building Construction Program, Canadian Housing Statistics Program, and the 2021 Census of Population. Data are organized geographically at the following levels (where applicable): Canada, province or territory, census subdivisions (CSD), and RST area or functional urban area.

These articles allow for a more in-depth look to relevant topics related to the Canadian population. The four articles linked to the families, households and marital status release and the structural type of dwelling and collectives release are entitled 'Fifty years of families in Canada,' ' Canadian households in 2011: Type and growth,' 'Living arrangements of young adults aged 20 to 29' and 'Living arrangements of seniors.'

This paper summarizes the data available from SLID on housing characteristics and shelter costs, with a special focus on the imputation methods used for this data. From 1994 to 2001, the survey covered only a few housing characteristics, primarily ownership status and dwelling type. In 2002, with the start of sponsorship from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), several other characteristics and detailed shelter costs were added to the survey. Several imputation methods were also introduced at that time, in order to replace missing values due to survey non-response and to provide utility costs, which contribute to total shelter costs. These methods take advantage of SLID's longitudinal design and also use data from other sources such as the Labour Force Survey and the Census. In June 2006, further improvements in the imputation methods were introduced for 2004 and applied to past years in a historical revision. This report also documents that revision.
