Release date: 2009-04-15 - Articles and reports: 85-561-M2009016Geography: CanadaDescription:
This report provides an overview of issues on mental health and the criminal justice system, as well as the feasibility of collecting data on individuals with mental illness in the criminal justice system. While there have been pockets of studies and data collection activities trying to quantify the issue at the police, courts and corrections levels, there is presently a lack of data to understand the extent of the problem to inform decision-making regarding policy and action, and to measure outcomes of current initiatives and processes.
The first part of the report describes issues with regard to mental illness and the criminal justice system, including definitional challenges, criminal justice system processes, previous studies on the prevalence of individuals with mental illness in the criminal justice system, and the relationship between individuals with mental illness and criminal justice involvement.
The second part presents the results from consultations with over 100 stakeholders, including law enforcement, courts, Review Boards, correctional services, mental health organizations, academics and researchers and non-governmental organizations. It also proposes options for collecting data on persons with mental health issues in the criminal justice system.

- 265. A profile of the Canadian Forces ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X200810713214Geography: CanadaDescription:
Canada's military makes up a small but significant segment of Canadian society and is an important part of the country's national image, both at home and abroad. After declining through the 1990s, the forces have grown since 2001, reaching 88,000 in 2006. This article profiles the personnel of the Canadian Forces as a special occupational group distinct from the rest of the Canadian labour force. It also compares the military's prevalence of rates of work stress and other work-related mental health issues with those of the civilian working population and investigates whether any specific groups experience a higher prevalence.

- 270. Methodological issues in measuring the mental health of children and young people in Great Britain ArchivedArticles and reports: 11-522-X200600110435Description:
In 1999, the first nationally representative survey of the mental health of children and young people aged 5-15 was carried out in Great Britain. A second survey was carried out in 2004. The aim of these surveys was threefold: to estimate the prevalence of mental disorders among young people, to look at their use of health, social and educational services, and to investigate risk factors associated with mental disorders. The achieved number of interviews was 10,500 and 8,000 respectively. Some key questions had to be addressed on a large number of methodological issues and the factors taken into account to reach decisions on all these issues are discussed.

- Public use microdata: 12M0024XDescription:
This package was designed to enable users to access and manipulate the microdata file for Cycle 24 (2010) of the General Social Survey (GSS). It contains information on the objectives, methodology and estimation procedures, as well as guidelines for releasing estimates based on the survey.
Cycle 24 collected data from persons 15 years and over living in private households in Canada, excluding residents of the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut; and full-time residents of institutions.
The purpose of this survey is to better understand how Canadians spent their time. Time use estimates can be produced based on information reported in the time use diary portion of the survey. This diary provides a detailed record of participation in a wide variety of daily activities, as well as the time devoted to them, where these activities took place, and the social relationships of the respondent. Also, for the first time, the 2010 GSS collected information on simultaneous activities, i.e. those that are performed at the same time as a primary activity. The questionnaire collected additional information on perceptions of time, time spent doing unpaid work, well-being, paid work and education, cultural and sports activities, transportation, and numerous socio economic characteristics.
Cycle 24 is the fifth cycle of the GSS dedicated to collecting data on time use. Previous cycles had been conducted in 1986, 1992, 1998 and 2005. Cycle 24 includes most of the content from previous cycles as well as new content, added to reflect the society's emerging issues.

- Articles and reports: 75-006-X202400100007Description: This study uses data from multiple waves of the Canadian Social Survey (CSS) to examine trends in three key Quality of Life indicators, namely life satisfaction, experiences of financial hardship, and future outlook. Monitoring these well-being indicators following periods of considerable social and economic change is particularly important. Beginning in the summer of 2021, the CSS, a new quarterly survey, captured the latter part of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the rising cost of living in Canada, allowing for an understanding of how Canadians are coping with these challenges.Release date: 2024-09-13

- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400700002Description: Mental health disparity is associated with diverse characteristics, such as gender, socioeconomic status, Indigenous identity, immigrant status, race, disability, and sexual orientation. However, intersectional studies on women’s mental health have been rare, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic period. To fill this research gap, this study examines women’s and girls’ self-reported mental health before and during the COVID-19 pandemic using seven characteristics, including Indigenous identity, immigrant status, racialized background, LGB+ sexual orientation, disability, and socioeconomic status (low income and unemployment).Release date: 2024-07-17

- Articles and reports: 82-003-X202400500002Description: The availability of measures to operationalize allostatic load—the cumulative toll on the body of responding to stressor demands—in population health surveys may differ across years or surveys, hampering analyses on the entire sampled population. In this study, the impacts of variable selection and calculation method were evaluated to generate an allostatic load index applicable across all cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). CHMS data were used to compare individual and population-level changes in scores for allostatic load indexes in which other commonly used measures were substituted for waist-to-hip ratio. Associations between the various constructs and indicators of socioeconomic position were then assessed to evaluate whether relationships were maintained across indexes.Release date: 2024-05-15

- Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 82-619-M2012004Geography: CanadaDescription:
Mental illnesses largely involve alterations in mood, thinking, and behaviour, as well as other domains of mental functioning, and affect almost all Canadians in some way, either directly or indirectly. They routinely cause significant impairments in emotional functioning, which may lead to social or physical limitations. In some cases, such as in agoraphobia, individuals cannot even leave their homes due to intense anxiety; depression can cause an individual to lose all interest in life. This document describes the mental illnesses that have the greatest impact on Canadians in terms of prevalence or severity of disability, and how they affect the health status of Canadians.
