Results from the Survey on Access to Health Care and Pharmaceuticals During the Pandemic provide a snapshot of self-reported access to health care services from March 2020 to May 2021 among individuals 18 years and older in Canada's 10 provinces. In this infographic, we look at adults who needed health care services during the COVID-19 pandemic but delayed contacting a medical professional.

Healthcare is a privilege that Canadians value greatly. However, virtual healthcare was a rarity before COVID-19. Immediately after the pandemic hit in March 2020, Canadians were forced to rethink how they access healthcare. Appointments that would usually have happened in an office were suddenly taking place by phone or video chat. Now, two years later, most health care is conducted virtually. The question is whether the access to virtual healthcare will disappear when the pandemic ends. Our guest, Dr. Gigi Osler, Co-Chair of the Virtual Care Task Force for the Canadian Medical Association, joins us to explore the barriers to virtual healthcare, the changes we saw during the pandemic, and what’s being done to make virtual care permanent.

The care economy, which includes paid and unpaid care for children, seniors, and people with disabilities, is a fundamental component of societies. In Canada, and around the world, demographic and socioeconomic transformations, notably the aging population, are increasing the demand for care workers. This study uses data from the 2016 Census of Population and from the Labour Force Survey to examine the personal and job characteristics of workers in paid care occupations by gender. It also examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the employment of workers in this sector, compared to workers in all other occupations.

This infographic presents differences in the caregiving arrangements of Canadians, as captured in Wave 4 (2018) of the Longitudinal and International Study of Adults. Among individuals who acted as caregivers between January 2016 and December 2017, some had provided care each month over the two-year period, while others had provided care for a continuous but shorter period of time, or on and off over the period considered. Moreover, individuals in different arrangements varied in their characteristics and in the intensity of the care they had provided.

The 2018 General Social Survey on Caregiving and Care Receiving collects information on Canadians who provide care to family and friends with a long-term health condition, disability or problems related to aging. The survey also covers individuals who receive this care and about the challenges both groups face.

Taking on the responsibility of an informal caregiver often means balancing other competing demands of life, such as working at a paid job, raising children and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships. This infographic explores how the number of hours per week spent on caregiving activities effects the overall well-being of informal caregivers and their participation in daily and social activities.

This paper outlines two indicators, food insecurity and unmet health needs, identified in Government of Canada's Opportunity for All - Canada's First Poverty Reduction Strategy that can now be produced using the Canadian Income Survey (CIS), starting in reference year 2018. Description: Individuals who are nearing death report a preference to be cared for and to die outside of hospital. The reasons for this preference are complex and multifactorial. This study examined differences in the use of end-of-life acute care and the location of death among residents with dementia in rural long-term care homes, compared with those in urban long-term care homes, in Ontario, Canada.

Description: Optimal oral health is an essential element of healthy aging. Oral health problems such as tooth loss, periodontal disease, and dry mouth accumulate throughout adult life and worsen with increasing age. Using data from the 2019/2020 Canadian Health Survey on Seniors, this study explores the link between dental insurance, income, and oral health care access among seniors (aged 65 and over) in Canada. It contributes to the understanding of oral health care among seniors before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

Description: Oral health is a crucial component of overall health, influencing both physical and mental well-being. Yet, despite the important role that access to and use of oral health care services play in maintaining optimal oral health, substantial disparities remain in access to oral health care services across population groups in Canada. Using data from the 2022 Canadian Community Health Survey, this study examines the association of dental insurance with oral health care access and use in Canada while accounting for income and sociodemographic factors. It contributes to a baseline of oral health care disparities before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

Policy analysts continue to search for alternative, less costly forms of care for the elderly and have attempted to develop programs to delay or prevent nursing-home entry.
