This report presents results and analysis of the Waste Management Industry Survey: Government Sector. The survey gathers information on waste collection, disposal and recycling practices of Canadian municipalities. The document provides an overview of waste management activities in large municipalities (5 000 or more residents). More than three quarters of the Canadian population are represented in this survey, allowing for estimates of municipal solid waste at the national level and for selected regional groupings. The report also presents information on waste management expenditures by local governments, including expenditures for services provided by contractors and by government employees.

Description: In early 1998, 3 successive storm fronts dropped as much as 110 millimeters of freezing rain through parts of Eastern Canada. This ice storm had a notable impact on the hundreds of thousands of people who suffered electricity outages which, in some cases, lasted longer than one month. But other effects were also felt and continue to be: human lives were lost, livestock perished, ecosystems were damaged, economies were disrupted, emergency response systems were strained beyond capacity. In short, Ice Storm 98 was an event that will not soon be forgotten.

This Statistics Canada publication gathers a series of six annotated maps and tables illustrating some of the impact the meteorological event had as it stormed through the St. Lawrence River Valley: population, employment, retail sales, vegetation cover, dairy cows and sugar maple taps are illustrated and briefly discussed.

The federal government's Canadian Environmental Industry Strategy consists of a number of initiatives to achieve a cleaner environment and a stronger environmental industry. Statistics Canada received funding from Industry Canada, under Initiative 8 of the strategy, to develop a national statistical database on the environment industry. Statistics Canada began a program consisting of new surveys, modifications to existing surveys and integration of statistics from various components of its economic statistics framework.

The environment "industry" does not exist as an explicit element in any existing classification. This is not surprising, because the environment industry consists of business involved in activities that span a number of different industries in the Standard Industrial Classification. Attempts had been made to identify environmental goods and services in existing classifications, but without appreciable success. It was necessary to develop new ways and new tools to obtain the information. These methods are outlined.

A major objective of the approach adopted by Statistics Canada is to provide sufficient detail to permit comparability of the results with other countries and to satisfy a variety of data needs.

This annual report presents environmental indicators for water quality, air quality, and greenhouse gas emissions. The water quality indicator documents the distribution of water quality at selected sites across Canada. The air quality indicator reports national and regional trends in ground-level ozone, a key component of smog, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). The greenhouse gas indicator describes the trend in emissions and the contribution to the trend by energy production, energy consumption and other factors. The socio-economic context provides links to economic performance and social progress. The indicators are intended to assist those in government responsible for developing policy and measuring performance, while also helping individual Canadians who want to know more about the trends in their environment.

The series Farm Environmental Management in Canada presents key information on agri-environmental practices used on Canadian farms. The series includes several articles on themes such as manure storage, manure application, water management, chemical inputs use and sustainable land management practices. These analyses are supported by data from the 2001 Farm Environmental Management Survey (FEMS) and supplemented with information from the 2001 Census of Agriculture. FEMS is the only dedicated national source of information on a broad range of farming practices that impact on the environment.

The FEMS survey collects farm-level information on manure management practices, sustainable grazing systems, crop nutrient management, pesticides application practices, land and water management practices (including irrigation farming practices), and whole farm environmental management. It provides benchmark information for anyone with an interest in agri-environmental issues.

The analysis contained in this article is based on results from the 2001 Farm Environmental Management Survey (FEMS). It presents information on various practices used to manage water on Canadian farms. Practices surveyed are divided in two groupings: those used to protect natural sources of water - maintaining vegetation on areas adjacent to natural sources of water, management of grazing livestock, conservation measures for natural wetland areas, and disposal of milkhouse wash water and toxic wastes; and those related to the use of water for farming and household activities types of irrigation systems and testing of domestic water.

Results show that farm practices impacting water quality and quantity are significantly used by Canadian farmers. Higher adoption rates of environmental measures could likely be achieved to reduce agriculture's environmental footprint. These results can assist governments, farmers and non-governmental organizations in targeting actions and in the promotion and development of new farm environmental programs and practices.

This article provides an analysis of greenhouse gas emissions from a demand perspective. The analysis is based on the greenhouse gas emissions accounts and input-output accounts produced at Statistics Canada. It shows that domestic requirements for goods and services led to 54% of Canadian industrial emissions, while production to satisfy exports accounted for the remaining 46%. Between 1990 and 2002, emissions associated with domestic demand grew slowly at 0.4% while those associated with the production of goods for export grew by 50%.

Statistics from the Households and the Environment Survey show that regional differences create a diversity of lawn and garden practices. Specifically, this study looks at how the application of pesticides and fertilizers and the use of outdoor water conservation devices vary.

Description: Spatial information products provide users with data for visualization, reference, mapping and spatial analysis using geographical information systems (GIS). Available files include spatial environmental data as well as documentation and metadata. This information is released as part of a suite of products associated with the Census of Environment (CoE). The CoE organizes data about Canada’s natural environment using the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting – Ecosystem Accounting international statistical standard, which takes a spatial approach to accounting for Canada’s ecosystems and natural capital.

Description: This document describes the methodology used to develop the land cover register, a raster dataset that maps Canada’s terrestrial and freshwater land cover using an 11-class classification system. The data product, with a spatial resolution of 30 metres, represents circa 2020 and was created through the integration of multiple land cover and land use datasets. The dataset and documentation were created by the Census of Environment program and will support Statistics Canada's ecosystem accounting efforts.

Description: This product contains gridded datasets of ocean and coastal ecosystem extent for ocean and coastal areas of Canada. Mapping the extent of ocean ecosystems is the first stage in creating spatially explicit accounts, to help understand the ocean and coastal ecosystems of Canada. The files cover the area from the coastline, defined by the 2021 Statistics Canada Census of Population, to the outer boundary of Canada’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Coastal areas of salt marsh are also included in the files.
