Release date: 2007-09-12 - 35. Measuring housing affordability ArchivedArticles and reports: 75-001-X200611113174Geography: CanadaDescription:
A household's ability to afford housing has traditionally been measured using income information derived from the census. A household spending 30% or more of its income on shelter was considered to have a shelter-cost burden. The Survey of Household Spending provides an alternative denominator based on total household spending.

This article takes a closer look at seniors who downsize, those who upsize and others who move for lifestyle reasons. It identifies the characteristics of senior movers, the life events associated with their move, and the various types of housing transitions they made.
Release date: 2005-12-06 - 37. General Housing Imputation (Excluding Utilities) in the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) ArchivedArticles and reports: 75F0002M2005010Description:
For some time, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has used data on housing characteristics and housing-related expenditures from the Census of Population. Although the Census data source serves CMHC's purposes to a large extent, the federal government agency turned to the annual household surveys of Statistics Canada to provide information on a more frequent basis. This would allow them to have a better picture of annual trends, and perhaps have a greater choice of other characteristics with which to cross housing data on Canadian households. In 2001, CMHC began to sponsor additional content in both the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) and the Survey of Household Spending (SHS), starting with reference year 2002.

- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202401000004Description: Amid growing concerns in Canada over housing affordability, questions have arisen about non-permanent residents’ experience in the Canadian rental market. This study uses data from the 2021 Census of Population to examine whether international students and temporary foreign workers face higher rental costs than the Canadian-born population (non-immigrants) and longer-term immigrants (those who were admitted more than five years preceding the census year). It also explores the factors contributing to disparities in rental expenses among these groups.Release date: 2024-10-23
- Stats in brief: 11-621-M2024010Description: The paper focuses on the subset of short-term rentals (STRs) that could potentially serve as long-term housing. This subset of STRs, referred to as potential long-term dwellings (PLTDs), is intended to capture STR units that are not serving as anyone’s primary residence, but could potentially function as long-term housing (either as owner-occupied or rental units). The PLTD subset is compared with total housing units (owned or rented) at the national, provincial and territorial levels, as well as in major census metropolitan areas and in tourist areas.Release date: 2024-07-30

- Articles and reports: 36-28-0001202300800003Description: One in three Canadian households rent their primary residence. Rental costs are often incomparable without accounting for differences across data sources, regions and dwellings (e.g. dwelling type, size, condition). Similarly, a failure to account for differences in terms of non-financial inclusions such as utilities, parking, appliances or air conditioning can undermine the validity of cost comparisons. Using the 2021 Canadian Housing Survey (CHS), this study explores the prevalence of such rental inclusions and their potential impact on rental costs.Release date: 2023-08-23
- Articles and reports: 11-621-M2023008Description: This is an overview of how private short-term rentals have grown and impacted the accommodation services subsector from 2017 to 2021. It includes a discussion of national, provincial, territorial and selected subprovincial trends and what changed during the COVID-19 pandemic years. This study examined results from Statistics Canada's annual accommodation services survey and AirDNA's monthly data on short-term rentals to make market share comparisons at various geographic levels.Release date: 2023-06-30

Release date: 2020-10-02 - Articles and reports: 13-605-X201900100001Description:
Statistics Canada continuously works to ensure that economic measures reflect our reality, including new and emerging activities such as the private short-term accommodation market. The Canadian Macroeconomic Accounts have developed provisional estimates of the private short-term accommodation market in Canada, the provinces and territories. This paper outlines an innovative approach to measuring this activity using web-scrapped data. In addition to providing provisional estimates of the overall market, this paper contains detailed analysis of the largest private accommodation digital platform used in Canada. Finally, it summarizes the approach taken for incorporating the data into various macroeconomic measures, such as gross domestic product (GDP).
Release date: 2019-03-14 - 10. Trends in Homeownership by Age and Household Income: Factors Associated with the Decision to Own, 1981 to 2006 ArchivedArticles and reports: 11F0027M2013083Geography: CanadaDescription:
This paper examines why rates of homeownership have been increasing amongst young higher-income households, but declining among young lower-income households. For the period from 1981 to 2006, household data from the Census of Population, supplemented with information from the Survey of Financial Security, are employed to model the decision to own across the income distribution. The model assesses whether housing market conditions (e.g., the cost of renting versus owning), the financial condition of households (e.g., whether the household has sufficient wealth to make a standard down payment), and demographic factors (e.g., changing family composition) account for these diverging trends in housing demand.
