While the teaching profession adapts to demographic shifts in the student population, it is also experiencing changes from within. Using data from the Labour Force Survey, this article profiles university and college professors and elementary and secondary teachers from 1999 to 2005. Elementary and secondary school teachers remain the larger group, but university professors are the fastest growing one. Teachers and professors are older than the average worker. They also work longer hours during the school year.

This paper uses the 2003 General Social Survey (GSS) to examine the extent to which Canadians aged 15 and over feel a sense of mastery, or responsibility for what happens to them in life. A mastery scale, comprised of seven indicators measuring such elements as the respondent's perceived control over things that happen in life, problem solving capability, feelings of helplessness and the ability to accomplish goals, was used in the analysis. A statistical model was also designed to examine the influence of a number of socio-demographic, family, economic, community and well-being characteristics on the respondent's sense of personal control.

This paper examines educational outcome at age 19 associated with reading ability at age 15. Does ability in reading at age 15 have an impact on subsequent high school completion and postsecondary participation? Are different postsecondary opportunities realized by those with varying reading ability levels?
This paper investigates these questions using Canadian data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS). It is not the intent of this paper to explore the complex pathways and processes associated with dropping out of high school or pursuing postsecondary participation. Rather, by examining only the direct pathways between reading literacy at age 15 and education outcomes at 19, this paper provides a general overview and first glance at the nature of this relationship.

Major categories are travel, transportation, commercial and government services. Commercial services, comprising a range of business and professional services are categorized by geographical area (United States, European Union and all other countries), industry, country of control (Canada, United States, other) and whether or not the service was with foreign affiliated companies; these details are presented from 1996.
New with the 1999 issue are annual breakdowns from 1991 of total services for 8 additional countries beyond the 47 already published. Each country is broken down into the following categories: travel, transportation, commercial and government services. For Canada as a whole, quarterly data for these same categories and 19 subcategories are also published from 1997, on both a raw and seasonally adjusted basis. The publication includes several pages of data analysis accompanied by graphics, definitions and data quality measures. Statistics are derived from surveys, administrative data and other sources.
