This article highlights initial findings from the 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey regarding the school experiences of First Nations children aged 6 to 14 who are living off reserve. The goal of this report is to provide a descriptive portrait of the early school experiences among First Nations children, as well as to gain an understanding of some of the contextual factors likely to be associated with their school achievement. To meet this end a number of factors are explored, including school experiences, socio-demographic characteristics, activity limitations and medical conditions, and out-of-school activities.

These experiences were measured using the responses of parents or guardians to the PALS, a post-censal survey conducted shortly after the 2001 and 2006 Census. Issues examined include the prevalence of specialized education, difficulties obtaining specialized education, met and unmet educational needs, and resulting outcomes.

A sample of those persons who answered 'Yes' to the 2001 Census disability filter questions were included in the PALS survey population. Approximately 35, 000 adults (aged 15 and over) and 8,000 children (aged 0 to 14) living in private or collective households in the 10 provinces were selected to participate in the survey. Persons living in institutions, on Indian reserves, and in the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut were excluded from the survey. The data were collected after the 2001 Census, in the fall of 2001.
These tables contain data on the educational attainment, labour force activity and income of adults with and without disabilities.

The data were collected after the 2001 Census, in the fall of 2001.
These tables contain data on the number of adults and children with disabilities, disability rates, as well as the type and severity of disability, by age and sex, for Canada and the provinces.

This public use microdata file provides unaggregated data on the Aboriginal adult population - those who identify with their Aboriginal origin(s) and those who do not. For persons who identify, it contains almost 700 variables from the 1991 survey, such as, the group with which they identify, language proficiency, disability, chronic health conditions, schooling, work experience and the 1991 Census variables such as, income levels, marital status, fertility. The same census variables are provided for the population who does not identify.

This paper uses Canadian data from the 2002 and 2003 National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth to examine the levels of altruism or prosocial behaviour, anxiety or emotional disorder, and physical aggression or conduct disorder for children aged 8 to 11 with and without learning disabilities, controlling for characteristics of the child, the family and parenting style. Children were identified as having learning disabilities if they were diagnosed as having this long-term condition by a health professional.
