Using 2011 Census data, this profile provides a statistical overview of the age and sex as well as families, households, marital status, structural type of dwelling and collectives and language characteristics for census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations. In the census product line, groups of related variables are referred to as 'release components of profiles.' These are made available with the major releases of variables of the census cycle, starting with age and sex. Together, they will form a complete Census Profile of all the variables for each level of geography, plus one cumulative profile for the dissolved census subdivisions. Starting with the age and sex major day of release, and on major days of release thereafter, profile component data are available at the Canada, province and territory, economic region, census division and census subdivision levels, at the census metropolitan area, census agglomeration, population centre, and census tract levels, designated places, and at the federal electoral district (based on the 2013 Representation Order) level. Description: This article examines population growth at the subprovincial level. There was much variation in population growth at the subprovincial level between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010 with some areas growing more rapidly than others. Higher growth in some census divisions can be attributed to one or more factors such as urban sprawl around large metropolitan areas, net intraprovincial migration as well as natural increase. The article examines the high population growth in Saskatchewan's census metropolitan areas, as well as the settlement pattern of international migrants.

The educational attainment of Canadians has risen considerably over the last two decades. The average years of schooling of the population aged 25 to 54 has grown from 11.8 years in 1981 to 13.3 years in 1996. Yet it is generally perceived that spatial disparities in educational attainment remain substantial. This bulletin investigates the spatial patterns in educational attainment and how they have changed since 1981. A better understanding of subprovincial patterns and trends can support federal and provincial policy making in this area of concern.

This paper applies a broad set of disparity measures to subprovincial income data in Canada. The data used in this research come from income tax returns from 1992 to 1999, for about 280 census divisions covering the entire country. This approach provides an understanding of the spatial structure of income disparity with a high level of geographical resolution, which also highlights the evolution of the rural/urban divide. Since the period of study is short, the results are particularly relevant in understanding the spatial characteristics of the growth that occurred during the 1990s.

Recent research has suggested that investment has shifted from urban areas to more rural locales. However, Canadian manufacturing remains predominantly an urban activity with more than 40% of manufacturing employment located in Canada's three largest urban regions. This paper examines the changing manufacturing landscapes of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver and outlines the shifts in industry mix, employment, and wage levels that have taken place over the period between 1976 and 1997. The analysis uses a longitudinal plant-level database based upon the Annual Survey of Manufactures conducted by Statistics Canada.

Toronto and Vancouver both experience growth in the manufacturing sector, while Montreal experiences decline driven by differences in their industrial structure. Manufacturing activity has increased in a number of sectors of Toronto's economy, but has been particularly influenced by the growing automotive sector that ties the city to a large North American market. Montreal has experienced declines across most of the manufacturing industries. A heavy concentration of employment in labour intensive industries such as textiles and clothing, which have experienced severe declines across Canada, has amplified the level of decline in Montreal. However, Montreal has seen some growth in science-based industries. While Vancouver's manufacturing economy is much smaller in absolute terms, maintaining slightly less than a 5% share of national manufacturing employment, it has exhibited higher levels of long-run growth and restructuring than its eastern counterparts.

A second focus of the paper is to explore the relationship between economic volatility and diversity in the manufacturing sector using a number of statistical measures. Toronto and Montreal have diverse industrial structures, although each has become slightly more concentrated over the study period. In Montreal, this is due to the increasing importance of other industries, as the clothing and textiles industry declines. In Toronto, this can be attributed to the increased importance of the food and transportation equipment industries. Vancouver has become increasingly diversified over the study period, reflecting the growth and dynamism of this sector. The mature manufacturing economies of Toronto and Montreal exhibit lower levels of volatility than their western counterpart.

The Standard Geographical Classification (SGC) is a system of names and codes representing areas of Canada. It consists of a three-tiered hierarchy - province or territory, census division, and census subdivision. This relationship is reflected in the seven-digit code. The SGC is used to identify information for particular geographical areas and to tabulate statistics. This volume is designed as a reference and coding manual. It contains tables of SGC units with their names and codes, as well as tables of metropolitan areas. This preliminary version of Volume I will be followed in January 2007 by the final version.

The Population Ecumene Census Division Boundary File contains a generalised population ecumene based on 2001 Census population density data with at least one ecumene polygon for every census division (CD). It can be used to produce small-scale thematic maps of statistical data. This file is not a Cartographic Boundary File and it has its own reference guide (Catalogue No. 92F0159GIE).Coordinates: Latitude/longitude (NAD83).

For the 2001 Census, four national maps (covering all of Canada) show the following standard geographic areas:

(a) Census Divisions, 2001 - Shows the census division (CD) boundaries and codes within each province and territory, on a background of major lakes and rivers. The map also lists the CD names in CD code order, by province and territory.

(b) Economic Regions and Census Divisions, 2001 - Shows the economic region (ER) and census division (CD) boundaries and codes within each province and territory. The map also lists, by province and territory, the ER names in ER code order, within which their component CD codes and names are numerically listed.

(c) Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations, 2001 - Shows the general location of census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and census agglomerations (CAs) within each province and territory, with large dots designating CMAs and small dots designating CAs. The map also lists the CMA/CA names in CMA/CA code order, by province and territory.

(d) Statistical Area Classification, 2001 Census Subdivisions - Shows census subdivisions (CSDs) classified by colour according to the category of the Statistical Area Classification (SAC) they are assigned to. The categories include: component of a census metropolitan area/census agglomeration, component of a census metropolitan area and census agglomeration influenced zone (strongly influenced, moderately influenced, weakly influenced or not influenced), or component of the north (Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon Territory).

The scale of the CD, ER, and CD, and CMA and CA maps is 1:10,000,000 (with an inset showing southern Quebec and southern Ontario at 1:5,000,000), and their approximate dimensions are 91 cm by 66 cm (36 inches by 26 inches). The approximate size of the PDF files varies between 1.2 MB and 1.4 MB.

The scale of the SAC map is 1:7,500,000 (with an inset showing southern Quebec and southern Ontario at 1:4,000,000), and its approximate dimensions are 91 cm by 91 cm (36 inches by 36 inches). The approximate size of the PDF files is 4.3 MB.

The set of Census Division and Census Subdivision Reference Maps covers all of Canada, by province and territory. The maps show the boundaries, names and codes of census divisions (such as counties and regional districts) and census subdivisions (such as cities, towns, villages, other local municipal entities, townships and Indian reserves). The maps also show the boundaries of census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations. There are 22 maps in the set: one map covers each province or territory, except for Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta where two maps cover each province, British Columbia where three maps cover the province, and Quebec where four maps cover the province. The maps vary in scale (ranging from 1:310,000 to 1:3,500,000) and size, the maximum dimensions being approximately 145 cm by 99 cm (57 inches by 39 inches). The maps have the same general look as in 1996. A reference guide is available (Catalogue No. 92F0149GIE). The complete set of CD/CSD maps is available in the Standard Geographical Classification Manual, Volume II (Catalogue No. 12-572-XPB). This national map shows the boundaries, names and codes of federal electoral districts (FEDs) according to the 1996 Representation Order, on a background of major lakes and rivers. Insets show more detail for the congested areas on the map. The FED map was produced by Natural Resources Canada for Elections Canada. The dimensions of this map are approximately 28 cm by 79 cm (11 inches by 31 inches).
