The federal government's Canadian Environmental Industry Strategy consists of a number of initiatives to achieve a cleaner environment and a stronger environmental industry. Statistics Canada received funding from Industry Canada, under Initiative 8 of the strategy, to develop a national statistical database on the environment industry. Statistics Canada began a program consisting of new surveys, modifications to existing surveys and integration of statistics from various components of its economic statistics framework.

The environment "industry" does not exist as an explicit element in any existing classification. This is not surprising, because the environment industry consists of business involved in activities that span a number of different industries in the Standard Industrial Classification. Attempts had been made to identify environmental goods and services in existing classifications, but without appreciable success. It was necessary to develop new ways and new tools to obtain the information. These methods are outlined.

A major objective of the approach adopted by Statistics Canada is to provide sufficient detail to permit comparability of the results with other countries and to satisfy a variety of data needs.

The special ten year anniversary edition of Canadian cancer statistics 1997 represents a collaborative effort between Statistics Canada, the National Cancer Institute of Canada, Health Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society, and provincial/territorial cancer registries. This 71 page monograph contains estimates of cancer incidence and mortality for 1997, historical (actual and estimated) data from 1969 to 1997, and selected indicators on the burden of cancer. Estimates were produced by modelling actual cancer incidence and mortality data by province for selected cancer sites. The special topic this year is a comparison of the burden of cancer in Canada in 1997 to that reported in the first edition in 1987.

The publication presents the results of the 1992-93 surveys of architectural, consulting engineering and scientific and technical services. There are three sections in the publication, one for each of the industries surveyed. Each section includes a description of the industry, a discussion of methodology, an analysis of the data, coverage and data quality, as well as explanatory notes related to the statistical tables. For each industry, tables showing detailed statistics by province or region are followed by tables detailed according to revenue size group. The tables have been numbered in such a way as to facilitate comparisons between industries, and also between provinces and revenue size groups within each industry.

The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) uses the Labour Force Survey sampling frame to draw a sample of approximately 22,000 households. The sample is distributed over four quarterly collection periods. In each household, some limited information is collected from all household members and one person, aged 12 years and over, in each household is randomly selected for a more in-depth interview.

The questionnaire includes content related to health status, use of health services, determinants of health and a range of demographic and economic information. For example, the health status information includes self-perception of health, a health status index, chronic conditions, and activity restrictions. The use of health services is probed through visits to health care providers, both traditional and non-traditional, and the use of drugs and other medications. Health determinants include smoking, alcohol use, physical activity and in the first survey, emphasis has been placed on the collection of selected psycho-social factors that may influence health, such as stress, self-esteem and social support. The demographic and economic information includes age, sex, education, ethnicity, household income and labour force status.

This paper advances the case that administrative records are a powerful source of statistics and in support of this conclusion provides an overview of the extensive utilization in Canada of administrative records for statistical purposes. The paper discusses recent developments and the changing environment which are seen as major determinants of both the creation of administrative data bases as well as their utilization. The capabilities of the computer, combined with the extensive demand for statistics and the limited financial resources available to meet that demand, are seen as combining to lead to more extensive use of administrative records. A variety of problems associated with the use of administrative records is specified and the development of strategies to meet these problems and permit utilization of administrative records is described. Recent developments in Canada intended to support the use of administrative records are indicated.

Non-response exists in any survey, but its magnitude depends upon the type of survey, the interviewers’ ability to conduct an interview, and the respondents’ motivation to respond to survey questions. This paper discusses non-response in relation to a number of household surveys and in particular the behaviour of non-response rates over time in a continuous survey such as the Canadian Labour Force Survey.

A profile of interviewers employed by Statistics Canada shows that the correlation between non-response and a number of interviewer characteristics is not significant. Respondents themselves, and their motivation, are the key elements in an interview process and therefore in respondent relations.

This article draws on the results of various studies conducted to investigate the effects of response burden, choice of respondent and response incentives to provide some insight into the characteristics of non-respondents.

Madow [1968] has proposed a two-phase sampling scheme under which response bias can be eliminated from sample surveys by obtaining “true” values for a subsample of the original sample. Often in cases of Censuses or ongoing surveys, the subsample data are not used to correct the main survey estimates but to assess their reliability. The main purpose of this paper is to present methods by which reliability estimates can be obtained when true values can be determined for a subsample of units.

By randomly rounding all the components of a total, independently, together with the random rounding of the total itself, substantial discrepancies may arise when aggregating the published data. Tracking water yield—an estimate of renewable water supply derived from National Water Data Archive (HYDAT) streamflow data—provides information to help understand water resources available for human use and ecosystem needs. Annual datasets are available for the years 1971 to 2021 and cover southern Canada. Thirty-year averages are available for 1971-2000, 1981-2010, and 1991-2020.
