Release date: 2000-01-14 - 322. Advanced Technology in the Canadian Food Industry ArchivedJournals and periodicals: 88-518-XGeography: CanadaDescription:
The food-processing industry benefits from a wide a range of new advanced technologies. Technological advances include computer-based information and control systems, as well as sophisticated processing and packaging methods that enhance product quality, improve food safety and reduce costs. Continuous quality improvement and benchmarking are examples of related business practices.
This study examines the use of advanced technologies in the food-processing industry. It focuses not just on the incidence and intensity of use of these new technologies but also on the way technology relates to overall firm strategy. It also examines how technology use is affected by selected industry structural characteristics and how the adoption of technologies affects the performance of firms. It considers as well how the environment influences technological change. The nature and structure of the industry are shown to condition the competitive environment, the business strategies that are pursued, product characteristics and the role of technology.
Firms make strategic choices in light of technological opportunities and the risks and opportunities provided by their competitive environments. They implement strategies through appropriate business practices and activities, including the development of core competencies in the areas of marketing, production and human resources, as well as technology. Firms that differ in size and nationality choose to pursue different technological strategies. This study focuses on how these differences are reflected in the different use of technology for large and small establishments, for foreign and domestic plants and for plants in different industries.
Release date: 1999-12-20 - 323. Innovative Activity in Canadian Food Processing Establishments: the Importance of Engineering Practices ArchivedArticles and reports: 11F0019M1999101Geography: CanadaDescription:
This paper examines the factors contributing to innovative activity in the Canadian food processing sector. The study first focuses on the importance of research and development activity and advanced business practices used by production and engineering departments. Second, it examines the extent to which larger firm size and less competition serve to stimulate competition-the so-called Schumpeterian hypothesis. Third, the effect of the nationality of a firm on innovation is investigated. Finally, industry effects are examined.
The paper finds that business practices are significantly related to the probability that a firm is innovative. This is also the case for R&D. Size effects are significant, particularly for process innovations. Elsewhere, their effect is greatly diminished once business practices are included. Foreign ownership is significant only for process innovations and not for product innovations. Competition matters, more so for product than for process innovations. Establishments in the 'other' food products industry tend to lead when it comes to innovation, whereas fish product plants tend to lag.

The development of aquaculture parallels the transition that occured in agriculture several thousand years ago. Agriculture appeared when hunters and gatherers began to raise livestock and plant crops to produce food. The parallel transition with aquatic species is becoming an important activity in the Canadian economy. As a result of new initiatives, Statistics Canada is now able to provide economic data for the developing industry of aquaculture.
Release date: 1999-10-06 - Articles and reports: 21-004-X19990094726Geography: CanadaDescription:
The agriculture industry in Canada was built largely by immigrants. They arrived, mostly from Europe and Asia, as land grant settlers and homesteaders or as indentured or hired labour. Times have changed. Ninety percent of foreign born Canadians now live in the 15 largest cities. While many recent immigrants still work in agriculture, increasingly they are entrepreneurs who are managing businesses of significant size.

They are including more fruit and vegetables, legumes, poultry, meat, grains, cereal products and salad oils in their diets. At the same time, they are shifting away from meat, butter, and milk. Changes in consumer preferences, convenient pre-packaged products, growing ethnic diversity, price, health concerns, marketing and advertising are some of the factors influencing consumption patterns.

The 1996 Census of Agriculture reported the highest share of census-farm operators over 60 years of age in Canadian history. The share has been increasing since 1981. Are farmers a dying phenomenon? Are there any young farmers? The purpose of this article is to review the census-farm operator age structure to understand some reasons for an apparent ageing of the census-farm operator population.
Release date: 1999-03-17 - Articles and reports: 21-004-X19990034498Geography: CanadaDescription:
Canadian farmers are successfully meeting the demand for fresh fruit and vegetables during the local growing season. Due to the short duration of the growing season however, imports are required to fill the shelves for a significant part of the year. Although overall prices for fresh produce are trending downwards, these imports cost more in the grocery stores and fresh markets than domestic produce.

Based on a presentation by Dr. Ivan Fellegi to the Federal Deputy Ministers' Committee on the Economic Renewal of Rural Canada in September l996, Understanding rural Canada uses charts and maps to present information on: rural demography showing population change and net migration by census division for the most recent 5-year period (l989 to l994); a focus on rural youth including information on education attained, plans for further education and ablility to use computers; rural employment, rural unemployment, rural employment in growing sectors and rural employment by small businesses; a classification of census divisions by level of average incomes and change in average incomes to show that many rural areas have lower incomes and their incomes are falling further behind; and, a typology of census divisions where rural areas are classified to rural nirvana areas, agro-rural areas, rural enclave areas, rural resourced areas and native north areas. This presentation was an outgrowth of the publication Rural Canada: a profile published by the federal Interdepartmental Committee on Rural and Remote Canada in March, l995.

Release date: 2012-05-10 - 12. Whole Farm Database Reference Manual ArchivedSurveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 21F0005GDescription:
The Whole Farm Data Base (WFDB) is the product of a joint venture between Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Statistics Canada. It was developed with the intention to meet the increasing demands of users of agricultural statistics for more disaggregated data at the whole farm level. The WFDB provides the means for users to evaluate agricultural policies and programs as well as analyze the viability, stability, and competitiveness of various farm businesses.
Integrating into one base the agricultural data, which are available from administrative and survey sources, is the essence of the WFDB. It can offer users access to a wider than ever range of disaggregated physical and financial data at the farm level.
This reference manual will familiarize potential users of the WFDB with the structure of the data base and the quality of the data and give a description of the WFDB products and services that are currently available.

Release date: 2011-02-01 - Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 16-001-M2009008Description:
In 2008, Statistics Canada conducted the first Agricultural Water Use Survey. This pilot survey is part of the Canadian Environment Sustainability Indicators initiative and collects information on volumes of water used for irrigation, irrigated areas, irrigation practices and the quality of water used for agricultural purposes. This technical paper describes the methodology used for the pilot survey and includes recommendations for future cycles of the survey. The validation process seems to indicate that the method used to estimate the volumes of water used and the irrigated areas calculated underestimates the results. The report gives recommendations to minimize this bias in the next iterations of the survey. First, it is recommended to simplify the level of information collected by the survey; to review the sampling methodology; and to examine other means of collecting information on volumes of water used for irrigation. This pilot version of the survey remains a reliable source for consistent data on agricultural water use.
Release date: 2009-06-26 - Geographic files and documentation: 92-175-GDescription:
This boundary file delineates areas of significant agricultural activity in Canada as indicated by the 2006 Census of Agriculture. It is available at the Canada level, except for the territories, and is generalized for small-scale mapping. This agricultural ecumene enables users to thematically map data aggregated to the census division level and limits the data display to those areas where agricultural activity is concentrated in Canada. When used in dot and chloropleth maps, the ecumene concept provides a more accurate depiction of the spatial distribution of data within standard geographic areas such as census divisions. Agricultural indicators including the ratios of total agricultural land to total land area, and total agricultural receipts to total land area were used in generating the agricultural ecumene.
