The Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS) is a national survey on the social and economic conditions of Aboriginal Peoples (First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit) aged 6 years and over. The 2012 APS represents the fourth cycle of the survey and focuses on issues of education, employment and health.

The article “Inuit health: Selected findings from the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey” reports on the self-reported health status and chronic conditions of Inuit aged 15 years and older. Also covered are health behaviors such as smoking and drinking, and selected determinants of health such as food insecurity, access to health care, housing and culture. The results are for all Inuit in Canada, presented by the total population, inside and outside Inuit Nunangat and the four Inuit regions.

The article "The Education and Employment Experiences of First Nations People Living Off Reserve, Inuit, and Métis: Selected Findings from the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey" describes education pathways, education experiences and current employment of adults aged 18 to 44 who were not attending high school at the time of data collection. It includes analyses of personal, family and school-related experiences during the last year of school, postsecondary education profiles and selected characteristics of workers, the unemployed and those not in the labour force. As well, the article addresses the subject of barriers to further education or training.

This objective of this report is to present the status of national data on Aboriginal people who come into contact with the criminal justice system as offenders and victims. The report examines the current and potential collection of an individual's Aboriginal identity through various justice-related surveys at Statistics Canada, the challenges within these surveys to collect these data and provides some insight into the quality of these data. The data and sources are examined within the context of information needs for the justice and social policy sectors, and in relation to the preferred method of measuring Aboriginal Identity at Statistics Canada. Data sources examined include the Incident-based Uniform Crime Reporting Survey, the Homicide Survey, the Integrated Criminal Courts Survey, the Adult Corrections Survey, the Youth Custody and Community Services Survey, the Youth Alternative Measures Survey, the Transition Home Survey, the Victim Services Survey and the General Social Survey on Victimization. Finally, the report briefly describes efforts by other countries to improve justice-related information on their indigenous populations.

The purpose of this document is to provide users with a discussion of the concepts and definitions used in the 2001 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, which was conducted in the fall of 2001 through to the spring of 2002. Technical details on sampling, processing, data quality, etc. are also included. The guide explains the relationship between the Aboriginal Peoples Survey and the 2001 Census and cautions users as to important differences in the data produced from the two sources. Description: While Statistics Canada recognizes the importance of having good quality data for First Nations communities that can be used for decision making and program planning, there is currently very little data (aside from Census data) about the people living on First Nations communities across Canada. This pilot survey is an important step aimed at determining the best methods for collecting data in these communities. It will also provide an opportunity to learn aspects of survey taking that may be unique in First Nations communities, such as communications with community leaders and respondents.

Description: Complementing the data collected by the census, the National Household Survey (NHS) is designed to provide information about people in Canada by their demographic, social and economic characteristics. In October 2014, Statistics Canada will be conducting a voluntary test in selected locations to evaluate the processes, procedures and systems that will be used for the 2016 Census Program. This ensures that quality data are available in 2016 to support a wide variety of programs.
