The value added in exports database provides data on the exports and imports of industries, as well as on the direct and indirect impact of each industry’s production for exports on industry and on total gross domestic product and jobs. Industry impacts can be viewed from the perspective of their incidence on other industries or from the perspective of an industry’s dependence on other industries. The data rely on the supply and use tables, which provide the basis for the calculations. Beginning with reference year 2013, a provincial and territorial dimension has been added to the measures. Imports embodied in exports have also been expanded to show their United States (US) and non-US origins.

Analysis (16)
Analysis (16) (0 to 10 of 16 results)
- Journals and periodicals: 13-016-XGeography: Province or territoryDescription: This publication presents an overview of recent economic developments in the provinces and territories. The overview covers several broad areas: 1) gross domestic product (GDP) by income and by expenditure, 2) GDP by industry, 3) labour productivity and other related variables.
The publication examines trends in the major aggregates that comprise GDP, both income- and expenditure-based, as well as prices and the financing of economic activity by institutional sector. GDP is also examined by industry. The productivity estimates are meant to assist in the analysis of the short-run relationship among the fluctuations of output, employment, compensation and hours worked. Some issues also contain more technical articles, explaining national accounts methodology or analysing a particular aspect of the economy.
This publication carries the detailed analyses, charts and statistical tables that, prior to its first issue, were released in The Daily (11-001-XIE) under the headings Provincial Economic Accounts and Provincial Gross Domestic Product by industry.
Release date: 2018-11-08 - 2. Terms of trade in central Canada ArchivedArticles and reports: 11-010-X200801210765Geography: Province or territoryDescription:
This paper examines Ontario's and Quebec's adjustments to the resource boom. Higher commodity prices, an appreciating dollar, and increased foreign competition between 2002 and 2007 led to a restructuring of the Central Canadian economies. The restructuring manifested itself in all areas of the economy: manufacturing employment and output declined, while services and construction rose; within manufacturing there were declines across most industries in Ontario, and a shift away from consumer products towards capital products in Quebec; purchasing power increased in Ontario and Quebec as export and import prices adjusted.

Release date: 2008-02-13 - Articles and reports: 11F0027M2007046Geography: Province or territoryDescription:
This paper examines the impact of import and export price changes on economic welfare in Canada, and in each of the provinces. It examines how terms of trade shifts and fluctuations in the ratio of traded to non-traded goods prices affect the purchasing power of domestic production. Terms of trade shifts are shown to have a larger impact in the short-run. Moreover, the paper shows that failing to account for terms of trade shifts, when analysing macroeconomic data, can lead to misinterpretations about the sources of growth or decline in consumption, investment and imports. The magnitude and direction of terms of trade fluctuations, and their impacts, vary by province and over time. Changes in commodity prices are shown to have important effects. The effect of terms of trade shifts is largest in Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador, while Manitoba is relatively unaffected.

Release date: 2005-04-07 - 9. Interprovincial Differences in GDP Per Capita, Labour Productivity and Work Intensity: 1990-2003 ArchivedArticles and reports: 11-624-M2005011Geography: Province or territoryDescription:
This paper compares output per person across Canadian provinces - using nominal or current dollar GDP per capita as the metric over the period 1990 to 2003. Differences in GDP per capita can be attributed to differences in the underlying efficiency of provincial economies. This is measured by labour productivity or GDP per hours worked. Differences also arise from the amount of human resources that are employed, as measured by work intensity or hours worked per capita. This paper examines the extent to which differences in GDP per capita can be attributed to each of these two factors.
Release date: 2005-02-22 - 10. Catching up and Falling Behind: The Performance of Provincial GDP Per Capita from 1990 to 2003 ArchivedArticles and reports: 11F0027M2004024Geography: Province or territoryDescription:
This paper compares gross domestic product (GDP) per capita across Canadian provinces for the period 1990 to 2003. It starts by examining relative GDP per capita measured in current dollars across provinces and over time. In the second section, growth in nominal dollar GDP is broken down into a price and a volume component to determine whether growth over the period came from a higher volume of real output or higher prices received for the products being produced. In the third section, the relationship between increases in the volume component (real GDP per capita) and changes in productivity or in labour market conditions (hours worked per employee and the proportion of the working age population employed) is explored.
