Description: The term "residential care facilities" refers to facilities with four beds or more that are funded, licensed or approved by provincial/territorial departments of health and/or social services. This report focuses on facilities for the aged, facilities for persons with mental disorders and other facilities which provide health or social care. Facilities for the aged include homes for the aged, nursing homes, lodges for senior citizens and rest homes. Facilities such as apartments or other homes for seniors that do not provide any level of care are not included. Facilities for persons with mental disorders include facilities for the psychiatrically disabled, the developmentally delayed, the emotionally disturbed children and centres for those with drug/alcohol problems. Some psychiatric institutions are included here. Facilities in the category 'Other' include those that do not fit in any of the previous categories. Facilities for persons with physical disabilities, for delinquents and transients would be included here.
Notes: This publication (83-237-XPB) was formed when the publication Residential Care Facilities (83-236-XPB) split to form publications Residential Care Facilities, Aged (83-237-XPB) and Residential Care Facilities, Mental (83-238-XPB). 83-237-XPB in turn merged to form Health Reports (82-003-XPB). The publication 83-237-XPB resumed publishing and continues Health Reports - Supplement no. 18. Relabel and file all Health Reports - Supplement no. 18 with 83-237-XPB.

With the 1993-1994 data, released in March 1996, this publication absorbed Residential Care Facilities, Mental (83-238-XPB).

For fiscal years 1984/1985 to 1993/1994, published data do not include any correction for non-response. No publication was produced between 1996 and 2005. Consequently, no data were published for fiscal years 1994/1995 to 2002/2003. As of fiscal year 2003/2004, released in 2006, the publication 83-237-X is titled Residential Care Facilities, and all data include correction for non-response. CANSIM data include all years from fiscal year 1984/1985, except for fiscal years 1994/1995 and 1995/1996, and include correction for non-response.

This product has been discontinued. Its final issue is "Residential Care Facilities, 2009/2010" released on September 29, 2011.
