Stocks of principal field crops, December 31, 2025
Released: 2026-02-06
Total stocks of wheat, canola, barley and oat, which are grown mainly in Western Canada, were up year over year as of December 31, 2025. Higher stocks for crops grown in the prairies were driven by increased production for the crop year. In contrast, stocks of corn for grain and soybeans were down, largely because of lower production in Eastern Canada.
Wheat stocks increase on record production
Total wheat stocks rose by 5.9% year over year to 27.5 million tonnes as of December 31, 2025. On-farm stocks rose 7.2% to 24.1 million tonnes, while commercial stocks decreased 2.7% to 3.4 million tonnes. The increase in total wheat stocks was largely due to record high production during the 2025 growing season.
Deliveries of wheat off farm rose 8.2% to a record high 17.1 million tonnes as of December 31, surpassing the previous record of 15.8 million tonnes set in 2024. Wheat exports climbed 7.9% to a record 12.1 million tonnes.
Canola stocks rise as exports fall
Canola stocks were up 18.1% year over year to 15.6 million tonnes as of December 31, 2025. The increase was attributable to higher on-farm stocks (+21.2% to 14.3 million tonnes) offsetting lower commercial stocks (-7.4% to 1.3 million tonnes).
Higher production in 2025 pushed total opening supplies of canola up 4.2% to 23.5 million tonnes as of December 31. Exports of canola fell 36.1% to 2.8 million tonnes, likely because of duties imposed during this period by China, one of Canada's largest export markets. Domestic use—largely for crushing—rose 3.0% to 5.1 million tonnes due to high supplies and ongoing expansion of domestic processing.
Corn for grain stocks decline
Total stocks of corn for grain fell 3.3% year over year to 10.9 million tonnes as of December 31, 2025. On-farm stocks decreased 7.9% to 7.3 million tonnes, while commercial stocks rose 7.3% to 3.7 million tonnes.
Soybean stocks are down on lower production
Total soybean stocks fell 26.6% year over year to 3.2 million tonnes as of December 31, 2025, driven by lower production (-10.7% to 6.8 million tonnes) in the 2025 crop year. On-farm stocks decreased 52.4% to 1.4 million tonnes, while commercial stocks rose 30.5% to 1.8 million tonnes.
Large supply pushes barley stocks higher
Barley stocks increased 16.7% year over year to 5.7 million tonnes as of December 31, 2025. Both on-farm (+15.7% to 5.3 million tonnes) and commercial (+31.5% to 426 100 tonnes) stocks rose compared with the same date one year earlier.
Domestic use—largely for feed—increased 13.9% to 3.5 million tonnes as of December 31, ahead of the five-year average. This growth was due to higher supply providing sufficient barley for animal feed.
Oat stocks rise
Stocks of oats rose 9.8% year over year to 2.7 million tonnes as of December 31, 2025. On-farm stocks climbed 12.8% to 2.4 million tonnes, offsetting lower commercial stocks, which fell 9.8% to 284 800 tonnes.
Domestic use rose 36.8% to 680 500 tonnes because of higher animal feed use.
Note to readers
Data on stocks of principal field crops held on farms come from the December Farm Survey of about 8,200 Canadian farmers conducted from December 13, 2025, to January 19, 2026. The 2025 Field Crop Survey – December also has two questions pertaining to permanent on-farm grain storage capacity and the percentage of grain stored on farms using temporary storage methods. These data are available in table 32-10-0003-01.
Data on commercial stocks of western major crops originate from the Canadian Grain Commission. Data on commercial stocks of special crops originate from a survey of handlers and agents of special crops.
National supply-disposition tables for the major grains and special crops are published jointly with the current release on stock levels and are available in online data tables 32-10-0013-01, 32-10-0014-01 and 32-10-0015-01.
Stock data are subject to revision during the two years following their initial publication.
