Relationship between victims of sexual assault with a charge laid and their assailant, by sex, Canada, 2009 to 2014
1.
Family member includes parents of the victim (natural father or mother, legal guardian, or step-parent), other immediate family (natural brother or sister or step/half/foster/adopted sibling), or any extended family related to the victim either by blood or by marriage (e.g., grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, sister/brother in laws, parents-in-law, etc.). Spouses of the victims are excluded.
2.
Intimate partner relationships include spouses, separated/divorced partners, boyfriend or girlfriends, ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriends, and any other intimate relationship type.
3.
Authority figure includes a person who is in a position of trust or authority and is not a family member.
4.
Other relationship types include business relationships, criminal relationships, roommates, or reverse authority figures.
Note(s):
Data include police-reported sexual assaults where a charge was laid by police on an accused in the incident, and where a single victim matched to a single accused. Excludes incidents where the sex of the victim was unknown (<1%).
