This is a custom report produced in collaboration between the Assembly of First Nations and Statistics Canada. It includes a variety of social and economic statistics for Status First Nations people living on and off reserve and includes comparisons with the non-Indigenous population.

Based on two crowdsourcing data collection initiatives, this article focuses the perceptions of safety, both at home and in public, among Indigenous people. Concerns about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on family stress and on violence in the home, as well as sense of safety in the neighborhood, are examined.

Using the 2016 Census and the 2017 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, the article highlights key measures of economic well being (low income, food security, ability to deal with unexpected expenses) for First Nations people, Métis and Inuit living in urban areas.

This study examines the patterns of response mobility to the Aboriginal identifier questions from 2006 to 2011 and 2011 to 2016. Response mobility, in this context, refers to people providing different responses over time to the Census questions about Aboriginal identity.

Among people who leave high school prior to completion, many return to formal schooling as adults. High school equivalency programs (such as a General Educational Development or Adult Basic Education program) give them the opportunity to go back and complete high school requirements. Using data from the 2017 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, this study examines the factors associated with upgrading and high school equivalency among the Aboriginal population living off reserve. It also examines whether high school equivalency or upgrading is associated with better educational and labour market outcomes.

This article, First Nations, Métis and Inuit Women explores the diverse circumstances and experiences of Aboriginal women in Canada. Overall, it highlights their demographic characteristics, families, housing, language, employment, income, education, justice and health. Where possible, data on First Nations, Métis and Inuit women are compared with those of their male counterparts and with non-Aboriginal women.

This article is adapted from the initial analytical report on the 2006 Aboriginal Children's Survey (ACS). The ACS was designed to provide a picture of the early development of Aboriginal children under age 6 and the social and living conditions in which they are learning and growing. The focus of this article is the family, community and traditional cultural activities of First Nations children living off reserve, Métis children, and Inuit children.

While most of the focus is on adults, there is also information provided on children. Data showing comparisons between Aboriginal groups are provided, as are some comparisons with the non-Aboriginal population. Findings are based on the 2001 Census and the 2001 Aboriginal Peoples Survey.
