Cleantech sales in Canada continue to climb in 2022

Canadian businesses sold $25.3 billion worth of environmental and clean technology goods in 2022, up $4.3 billion from 2021. Sales of related services accounted for $13.1 billion in 2022, compared with $12.5 billion in 2021.

Domestic and export sales of goods were up 20.8% for the clean technology sector in 2022, while domestic and export sales of services grew 4.7%.

Almost all subsectors contributed to the $4.3 billion increase in revenues from domestic and export sales of environmental and clean technology goods in Canada in 2022. Clean energy and smart grid services were the only sectors that didn't contribute to the $593 million increase to the national domestic and export sales of environmental and clean technology services.

Sales by province

Ontario businesses sold $16.6 billion worth of environmental and clean technology goods and services in 2022, the most of any province. Quebec was second at $8.5 billion in sales. Together, these two provinces accounted for almost two-thirds (65.3%) of all environmental and clean technology goods and services sold in 2022.

British Columbia ($4.8 billion), Alberta ($3.7 billion), and Saskatchewan and Manitoba combined ($3.1 billion) followed in terms of total revenues from sales of environmental and clean technology goods and services in 2022.

Exports on the rise

Exports of environmental and clean technology goods and services totalled $9.9 billion in 2022. The United States accounted for over two-thirds ($6.8 billion) of total clean technology goods and services exported from Canada. Exports to other international markets reached $3.1 billion.

Manufacturers and wholesalers of clean transportation technologies, such as fuel-efficient automotive and aerospace equipment, reported sales of exported goods higher than pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels. In 2022, export sales reached $3.6 billion and represented 36.3% of the total clean technology goods and services exported from Canada.

Employment in the environmental and clean technology sector

Environmental and clean technology industries provided employment for over 96,000 people across Canada in 2022.

Clean technology

These data are derived from the Survey of Environmental Goods and Services (SEGS).

Clean technologies are defined as follows:

  • any good or service designed with the primary purpose of contributing to remediating or preventing any type of environmental damage
  • any good or service that is less polluting or more resource-efficient than equivalent normal products that furnish a similar utility; their primary use, however, is not one of environmental protection.

The survey captures revenues from several areas of Canada's clean technology sector. Comprehensive measurement of clean technology sales in Canada's economy is available through Statistics Canada's Environmental and Clean Technology Products Economic Account (ECTPEA). SEGS is one of several components of this account. The ECTPEA captures all economy-wide transactions in the clean technology sector, such as clean energy and scrap metals, while the SEGS produces data on a subset of goods and services that are narrower in scope than the goods and services captured in the ECTPEA.

Starting in the 2021 reference year, the survey adopted the random tabular adjustment technique for the monetary estimates, which aims to increase the amount of data made available to users while protecting the confidentiality of respondents.
