Canadian maple producers harvested 10.4 million gallons of maple syrup in 2023, down 40.1% from the record-high production in 2022. Production fell in all maple-producing provinces, largely due to unfavourable weather, such as severe storms and temperature fluctuations, leading to lower yields in 2023.
Total production in Canada's top maple-producing province, Quebec, was 9.4 million gallons in 2023, down 41.3% from 2022 and the lowest level since 2018. An ice storm in late spring resulted in lower yields and production losses for many producers.
Compared with 2022, Ontario producers reported a 14.9% decrease in production to 502,000 gallons in 2023. Warmer days in southern Ontario extended the maple season for some producers; however, a delayed season in northern regions due to cold temperatures contributed to lower yields and a provincial decline in production. Production also fell in New Brunswick (-35.0%) due to lower yields stemming from poor weather conditions.
Canadian producers exported 7.7 million gallons of maple products in the first three quarters of 2023, an 8.7% decrease from the same period in 2022.
