The reporting methodology for the income variables for the Census of Population changed from respondent-supplied information in 2001 to a combination of respondent-supplied and income tax data in 2006. This change breaks data comparability for the income series as it relates to the farming sector. Refer to Break in the Agriculture–Population linkage net farm income data series for more information on the factors that explain such variances in census data.

  1. The data in this table are for families on unincorporated farms only. Farm families receive net farm income from unincorporated farm operations. Unincorporated farms may also distribute funds to the farm family as wages and salaries or rent. Incorporated farms are not included in this table as they do not distribute net farm income to the farm family, but may pay wages and salaries, rent and/or dividends instead.
  2. Investment income includes payments of dividends including those from farm corporations, interest on deposits and bonds, and other investment income excluding retirement investments (Registered Retirement Savings Plan [RRSPs] and Registered Retirement Income Fund [RRIFs]).
  3. "Other sources of income" includes government transfer payments (excluding farm-related government payments), retirement income including that from retirement investments (Registered Retirement Savings Plan [RRSPs] and Registered Retirement Income Fund [RRIFs]), and all other income. This category is a compilation of the "other income," "government transfer payments" and "retirement income" classifications from the Census of Population.
