Notes: The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) reports on reading, mathematics and science every three years, providing a more detailed look at each domain in the years when it is a major focus: mathematics in 2003 and 2012, science in 2006 and 2015, and reading in 2000, 2009, and 2018.
According to the OECD, level 2 can be considered a baseline level of proficiency, at which students begin to demonstrate the competencies that will enable them to participate effectively and productively in life. Students performing below level 2 can still accomplish some tasks successfully, but they lack some fundamental skills that may prepare them to either enter the workforce or pursue postsecondary education.
Percentage distributions may not add up to 100% due to rounding.
No data were collected in the three territories and in First Nations schools.
For a brief description of this indicator, including the methodology, please see the Handbook for the Pan-Canadian Education Indicators Program.
