In 2018, over 2 million criminal code incidents were reported by police, while the severity of crime had fallen 17% from 2008.

Note: The Crime Severity Index measures the volume and severity of police-reported crime in Canada.

In 2018, there were 1,798 incidents of police-reported hate crimes

  • 43% were motivated by a hatred of race or ethnicity
  • 36% were motivated by a hatred of religion
  • 10% were motivated by a hatred of sexual orientation

In 2014, 38% of women and 64% of men felt very safe walking alone in their neighborhood after dark.

Community Spotlight

Peacebuilders Canada is a non-profit organization that is committed to transforming the youth justice system to be support and empowering. Peacebuilders has diverted over 1,100 young people from across the City of Toronto out of the criminal justice system before trial and having all their charges withdrawn. Peacebuilders schools have seen an 80% reduction in student suspension rates through the use of restorative practices to change the way the education system addresses student misbehavior and conflict.
