Household total income and major source of income for farm households – Household total income classes by major source of household income in the year prior to the census for all farms, farms with one operator and farms with two or more operators, census year 2006
Canada Household total income in the year prior to the census:
All classes Under $25,000 $25,000 to $49,999 $50,000 to $74,999 $75,000 to $99,999 $100,000 and over
number of farms

  • 0true zero or a value rounded to zero
Notes:
All references to a dollar value are based on the current dollar of the respective year.

The reporting methodology for the income variables for the Census of Population changed from respondent-supplied information in 2001 to a combination of respondent-supplied and income tax data in 2006. This change breaks data comparability for the income series as it relates to the farming sector. Refer to Break in the Agriculture–Population linkage net farm income data series for more information on the factors that explain such variances in census data.

  1. The data in this table are for farm households on both unincorporated and incorporated farms. Farm households receive net farm income from unincorporated farm operations. Unincorporated farms may also distribute funds to the farm household as wages and salaries or rent. Incorporated farms do not distribute net farm income to the farm household but may pay wages and salaries, rent and/or dividends instead.
  2. Investment income includes payments of dividends including those from farm corporations, interest on deposits and bonds, and other investment income excluding retirement investments (Registered Retirement Savings Plan [RRSPs] and Registered Retirement Income Fund [RRIFs]).
  3. "Other sources of income" includes government transfer payments (excluding farm-related government payments), retirement income including that from retirement investments (Registered Retirement Savings Plan [RRSPs and Registered Retirement Income Fund [RRIFs]), and all other income. This category is a compilation of the "other income," "government transfer payments" and "retirement income" classifications from the Census of Population.
