Note: Initial victimization refers to the first incident of violent victimization in 2010 where a child or youth was identified as a victim of a police-reported violent offence. This initial incident is defined for analytical purposes and may not represent the true first experience of victimization as child and youth victims included in the cohort may have been victims of a violent crime or accused of a crime prior to this 2010 incident. Excludes historical offences (those that were reported in 2010 but occurred prior to January 1, 2010). Also excludes data from the province of Quebec, except when the most serious weapon was a firearm, and excludes data from Quebec City Police Service, regardless of weapon, for data quality reasons. Recontact or subsequent contact is any official contact with police that follows the initial victimization incident, either as a victim of a violent crime or as a person accused of any criminal incident, that occurs during the timeframe selected for analysis (2010 to 2024).
