Indigenous victims and accused are those identified by police as First Nations (Status or non-Status), Métis, Inuit, or an Indigenous identity where the Indigenous group was not known to police.

Non-Indigenous victims and accused includes instances where police have confirmed that a victim is not identified as an Indigenous person.

Includes all homicide incidents where police solved the homicide by charging or recommending charges against at least one accused person.

Includes all homicide incidents where police solved the homicide by means other than the laying or recommendation of charges against an accused person (e.g., due to the death of the accused person).

Note 5

Total excludes accused persons for whom the Indigenous identity was not provided by the accused person or was reported as unknown by police.

Note: Indigenous identity is reported by the police and is determined through information found with the victim, such as Status cards, or through information supplied by the victims' families, community members, or other sources (i.e., such as band records, or forensic evidence such as genetic testing). Victims and accused persons for whom gender or Indigenous identity were reported as unknown by police are excluded from this table.
