Note 1 Violations causing death include first degree murder, second degree murder, manslaughter, infanticide, criminal negligence causing death, and other related violations causing death. Return to note 2 referrer Note 3 Includes sexual assault, classified as one of three levels according to the seriousness of the incidents. Level 1 sexual assault is the category of least physical injury to the victim; level 2 includes sexual assault with a weapon, threats to use a weapon, or causing bodily harm; and level 3 includes aggravated sexual assault which wounds, maims, disfigures, or endangers the life of the victim. Also includes other sexual crimes such as non‑consensual distribution of intimate images, sexual interference, sexual exploitation, luring a child via a computer, and voyeurism. Return to note 3 referrer Note 4 Level 2 assault is defined as assault with a weapon or causing bodily harm and level 3 assault is defined as assault that wounds, maims, disfigures or endangers the life of the victim. Return to note 4 referrer Note 5 Level 1 assault is the least serious form of assault and includes pushing, slapping, punching and face-to-face verbal threats. Return to note 5 referrer Note 6 Other assaults include criminal negligence causing bodily harm, unlawfully causing bodily harm, discharge firearm with intent, using firearm or imitation firearm in the commission of an offence, pointing a firearm, assault against a peace or public officer, and other assaults. Return to note 6 referrer Note 7 Other violent violations include trap likely to cause or causing bodily harm, kidnapping, forcible confinement, hostage-taking, trafficking in persons, abduction, extortion, intimidation of a non-justice participant, explosives causing death or bodily harm, arson, and other violent violations. Return to note 7 referrer Note: Family violence refers to violence committed by spouses (legally married, separated, divorced and common‑law), parents (biological, step, adopted and foster), children (biological, step, adopted and foster), siblings (biological, step, half, adopted and foster) and extended family members (e.g., grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and in‑laws). Victims refer to those aged 89 years and younger. Victims aged 90 years and older are excluded from analyses due to possible instances of miscoding of unknown age within this age category. Excludes spousal victims under the age of 15 years. Excludes victims where the sex or the age was unknown or where the accused‑victim relationship was unknown. Excludes a small number of victims in Quebec whose age was unknown but was miscoded as 0. Percentages may not total 100% due to rounding.
