Note 1. Violations causing death include first degree murder, second degree murder, manslaughter, infanticide, criminal negligence causing death, and other related violations causing death. Sexual offences include sexual assault levels 1, 2 and 3 and other sexual violations, including child-specific offences, such as sexual interference and luring a child via a computer. Level 2 assault is defined as assault with a weapon or causing bodily harm and level 3 assault is defined as assault that wounds, maims, disfigures or endangers the life of the victim. Family violence refers to violence committed by parents (biological, adopted, step, foster), siblings (biological, adopted, step, half, foster), extended family members and spouses (legally married, separated, divorced and common-law partners). Victims refer to those aged 17 years and younger. Excludes spousal victims under the age of 15 years. Excludes victims where the sex or the age was unknown or where the accused-victim relationship was unknown. Excludes a small number of victims in Quebec whose age was unknown but was miscoded as 0.
