Note 1. The Common Offence Classification (COC) divides offences into 32 categories (e.g., major assault, impaired driving). This common classification of offences allows users to compare analytical results between different databases and to examine data in various sectors of the justice system using a single set of offence categories. Common Offence Classification categories are determined by aggregating each offence category in the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey into broader categories. Return to note 1 referrer Note 2. Refers to violence committed by married, separated or divorced persons, common-law partners, dating partners (current and former) and other intimate partners. Return to note 2 referrer Note 3. Refers to violence committed by parents, children, brothers, sisters, extended family members, friends, acquaintances, business or criminal associates, authority figures, neighbours and strangers. Return to note 3 referrer Note 4. Common assault (level 1 assault, section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada) is the least serious form of assault. A person commits common assault when he/she uses or threatens to use force against another person without that person’s consent. Includes assault with a weapon (level 2, section 267 of the Criminal Code of Canada), aggravated assault (level 3, section 268 of the Criminal Code of Canada) and other forms of assault (assault against a police officer and unlawfully causing bodily harm).
