Rates are calculated on the basis of 100,000 populations. Populations based upon July 1st estimates from Statistics Canada, Demography Division.

Note 2.

Unlike the Homicide Survey, this category includes criminal negligence causing death and other related offences causing death in addition to murder, manslaughter and infanticide.

Note 3.

Physical assaults includes all forms of assaults, including assault levels 1, 2, and 3, unlawfully causing bodily harm, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, using a firearm or imitation firearm in the commission of an offence, pointing a firearm, discharging firearm with intent, trap likely to cause bodily harm and other assaults.

Note 4.

Sexual offences include sexual assault levels 1, 2 and 3 and other sexual violations, including child-specific offences, such as luring a child and sexual exploitation.

Note 5.

Other violent offences include criminal harassment, uttering threats, indecent or harassing phone calls, robbery, extortion, arson - disregard for human life, intimidation of a justice system participant or journalist, intimation of a non-justice participant, explosives causing death/bodily harm, hostage taking, and other violent violations.

Note: Family violence refers to violence committed by parents, siblings, extended family and spouses.Excludes incidents where the sex and/or age of victim was unknown and where the relationship between the victim and the accused was unknown. Excludes spousal victims under the age of 15 years.
