Measured hypertension is characterized by a systolic or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 95th percentile for 6 to 17 year olds (2004, "National High Blood Pressure Education Program Working Group on High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents. The fourth report on the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of high blood pressure in children and adolescents", Pediatrics, Vol. 114(2 Suppl. 4th report), pp. 555-76). Measured hypertension is characterized by a systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 bpm or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 bpm for 18 to 79 year olds (Chobanian AV, Bakris GL, Black HR, et al., 2003, "Seventh report on the Joint National Comittee on the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure", Hypertension, 42(6) pp. 1206-52). Total household population aged 6 to 79, except those meeting the exclusion criteria (see the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) Data User Guide: Cycle 2).
