Note 1

International students are those who are pursuing education in a country other than their country of residence or the country in which they were previously educated. In Canada, international students are defined on the basis of their immigration status. Thus, international students include students who are not Canadian citizens nor permanent residents. This includes students who are in Canada with a study permit, students in Canada on another visa related to diplomatic, trade or other missions, and other non-Canadians with refugee or unknown status. It also includes those enrolled in a Canadian program from a Canadian institution that is not located in Canada (also known as “offshore students”) as well as non-Canadian students studying via the Internet.
