Canada Pension Plan Disability Beneficiaries Survey

Description: Health and Welfare Canada sponsored this study to learn more about the views and needs of disabled persons receiving Canada Pension Plan benefits. The information is intended to help in the evaluation and improvement of the Canada Pension Plan disability program. The survey was run in conjunction with Health and Welfare Canada, Program Evaluation Group.

Who/what was surveyed: Canada Pension Plan disability beneficiaries

How the data were collected: Self-completion - mail-out/mail-back

Geographic detail: Canada and provinces

Demographic detail: age, sex, marital status, place of birth, urban size group (urban/rural)

Information collected:

  1. Reason(s) for no longer receiving CPP benefits
  2. Demographic characteristics of CPP disability benefits recipients
  3. Dwelling characteristics
  4. Main health condition
  5. Activity limitations
  6. Long term physical conditions or health problems
  7. Long term emotional, psychological, nervous or mental condition
  8. Assistance required in daily activities
  9. Highest level of education
  10. Reading and writing skills
  11. Participation or interest in taking work-related training courses
  12. Employment and job characteristics prior to receiving disability benefits
  13. Ability to do any type of work
  14. Current class of worker
  15. Barriers to employment
  16. Requirements in order to return to work
  17. Service received from the CPP
  18. Expenses directly related to disability
  19. Total family income
  20. Total personal income
  21. Adequacy of personal income level to meet daily needs
  22. Sources of income
  23. Sources of income prior to receiving CPP disability benefits
