National Apprenticed Trades Survey

Description: This survey is to examine the labour market experience of completers and discontinuers of a registered apprenticeship program two years after they left the program.

Who/what was surveyed: All individuals who completed or discontinued an apprenticeship program in 1992.

How the data were collected: Computer-assisted telephone interviews

Geographic detail: Canada, provinces and territories

Demographic detail: age, marital status at the beginning/end of the apprenticeship program, number of dependents, language most often spoken at home/at work, ethnic origin

Information collected:

  1. General:
    • age
    • marital status at beginning/end of program
    • number of dependents
    • language most often spoken at home/at work
    • total employment income
    • ethnic origin
    • province/territory
  2. Screening:
    • Type of registered apprenticeship
    • Interest in/Reason for not becoming a registered apprentice
    • apprenticed trade
    • hours of on-the-job and in-school training
    • certificate of apprenticeship and/or of qualification
    • requirements of the program
    • year certificate obtained
  3. Prior to apprenticeship:
    • education, training and programs taken
    • main activity
    • work experience
    • reason for registering
    • union membership
    • move to register in program
  4. During apprenticeship:
    • year of registration
    • type of institution
    • equipment provided (adequacy)
    • techniques and theory (adequacy)
    • knowledge, proficiency and ability of teachers
    • satisfaction with program
    • provincial and interprovincial certification and assessment of exams
  5. Since apprenticeship:
    • work activity and labour force status in the 12 months after the end of the program
    • reason for part-time work
    • class of worker
    • training or courses taken

Frequency: One time only

Sample size: 20,000 individuals were traced, 13,000 completed the interview

Data availability: 1994

Reference period: Data were gathered on individuals who were deemed to have completed or discontinued an apprenticeship program in 1992 according to administrative records provided by provincial governments

Release dates: Fall 1995
