But because of the sector’s steady growth, an aging workforce, and the declining popularity of the occupation, the industry may soon face a shortage of qualified truckers. A recent overall picture of truck drivers based on various sources is presented.

The year 2005 was a good one for the labour market as the unemployment rate reached its lowest level in 30 years.
Trusteed pension plans
In 2004, just over 4.5 million employees were covered by an employer-sponsored pension plan. Most of the nearly four thousand plans were defined-benefit, but the proportion of other plans has been increasing since 1992.
