Additional information

The counts displayed in the Frontier Counts interactive dashboards correspond to the number of border crossings, not the number of unique travellers. A traveller can cross the border more than once during a given time period. The counts include only those travelling for tourism-related purposes, as defined by the United Nations World Tourism Organization. Crew members, truck drivers, military personnel on maneuver, diplomats, immigrants and travellers with other non-tourism purposes are excluded from the dashboards.

For more information and definitions, refer to the Frontier Counts statistical program page.

Leading indicator of air arrivals

This dashboard provides access to leading indicator data on arrivals by air in Canada for the last five years in an interactive and customizable format. It allows users to compare traveller volumes by day, airport and country of residence.

The data for this interactive dashboard are extracted from table 24-10-0056-01 ("Leading indicator, International visitors entering or returning to Canada by air, by country of residence and traveller type"), and only include travellers who made their border declaration using a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Primary Inspection Kiosk (PIK).

Note: Primary Inspection Kiosks were gradually installed in major airports from 2017 to 2020, so care should be taken when doing historical comparisons for all of Canada or for Toronto Pearson airport (Terminal 1 came online later than Terminal 3).

Leading indicator of land arrivals

This dashboard provides access to leading indicator data on arrivals by land in Canada for the last five years in an interactive and customizable format. It allows users to compare traveller volumes by day, geography, area of residence, vehicle licence plate region and trip duration.

The data for this interactive dashboard are extracted from table 24-10-0057-01 ("Leading indicator, International visitors entering or returning to Canada by land, by vehicle type, vehicle licence plate and traveller type"), and only include travellers who crossed the border at a CBSA Integrated Primary Inspection Line (IPIL) in an automobile, motorcycle or "other land vehicle".

Returning Canadians

This dashboard provides access to data on returning Canadian-resident travellers for the last five years in an interactive and customizable format. It allows users to compare traveller volumes by geography, trip duration, mode of transportation and arrival type.

The data for this interactive dashboard are extracted from table 24-10-0053-01 ("International travellers entering or returning to Canada, by type of transportation and traveller type").

Visitors to Canada

This dashboard provides access to data on non-resident travellers arriving in Canada for the last five years in an interactive and customizable format. It allows users to compare traveller volumes by geography, country of residence, trip duration and mode of transportation.

The data for this interactive dashboard are extracted from table 24-10-0055-01 ("Non-resident visitors entering Canada, by country of residence, mode of transportation, arrival type and traveller type").
