Note:
Preliminary estimates of migration between provinces and territories are produced using Canada child benefit (CCB) data.
Final estimates of interprovincial migration are produced using personal income tax data. By comparing the place of residence at the time of filing, it is possible to determine how many persons move, as well as their place of origin and their destination.
Definition
- Reference period
- Period from July 1 to June 30.
- Interprovincial migration
- Interprovincial migration represents movements from one province or territory to another involving a change in usual place of residence.
- In-migrant
- An in-migrant with reference to the province or territory of destination.
- Out-migrant
- A person who takes up residence in another province or territory is an out-migrant with reference to the province or territory of origin.
- Net migration
- The difference between the number of in-migrants and the number of out-migrants.
- Origin
- Province or territory of usual residence of migrants before their migration.
- Destination
- Province or territory of usual residence of migrants after migration.

Demographic estimates of interprovincial migration can be visualized in several ways:
For the net migration figure, it is possible to select:
- A province or territory of origin using the "Origin" drop-down menu.
- A province or territory of destination using the "Destination" drop-down menu.
For the table of migrants by origin and destination, it is possible to select:
- A reference period using the “Reference period” drop-down menu.
With your cursor, hover over an element to see the corresponding data.
All elements of the dashboard are interactive and interrelated.
Keyboard shortcuts and screen reader tips
Keyboard shortcuts and screen reader tips are available by entering the visual and pressing CTRL + Enter.
While in the visual, pressing SHIFT + "?" will open the keyboard shortcuts.
