How to use
How to use this application
This tool allows users to visualize data on foreign control in Canada and is split into three views: Country view, Macro region view, Industry sector view. The views are accessed by selecting on either of the three tabs on the page.
Country by industry sector tab
This view allows the user to select an Industry sector and a country of control from the menu, which will automatically update the bar chart on page, as well as the chart title.
The bar chart displays the percentage of foreign owned assets of a specific country of control and industry sector during the years 2014-2023.
Example: Selecting "All Industries" and "China" will display the evolution of the proportion of all foreign assets under Chinese control from the years 2014 to 2023.
A tooltip appears when the user hovers over any bar in the chart. The tooltip displays information on the year, industry sector, share of assets under foreign control, the country of control, the total asset value for that industry sector, and the foreign asset value for that industry in the given year.
Macroregion by industry sector tab
This view displays the evolution over time of the share of foreign assets owned by macro region and user-selected Industry sector
Example: Selecting "All industries" will display the fluctuations of the shares of total assets per macro region from 2014 to 2023.
Control by industry sector tab
This view displays a horizontal stacked bar chart of the percentage control of assets between foreign enterprises and Canadian enterprises, per industry sector for a selected year of choosing from 2014 to 2023.
A tooltip appears when the user hovers over any bar in the chart. The tooltip displays the industry selected, the country of control, the asset value for the specific industry and control in dollars and percentage, the year, and the total asset value of that industry.
