Additional information
This visualization is based on the data published in the tables of the Monthly Wholesale Trade Survey: Table 20-10-0074-01 Wholesale trade, sales(x 1000),Table 20-10-0076-01 Wholesale trade, inventories(x 1000) and Table 20-10-0003-01 Wholesale sales, price and volume, by industry, seasonally adjusted(x 1,000,000).
Prior to January 2004, data quality indicators were not available. During that period the industry classification was different and some industry groups did not exist. This gives only six or seven industries on the ten highest sales by industry treemap.
Sales in chained dollars are available only for Canada level, not for provinces and territories.
In the funnel chart of subsector sales for some provinces, you may see CONFIDENTIAL/NOT AVAILABLE. In case of the presence of confidential issues at least two subsectors are suppressed, but the total of these subsectors are displayed. A subsector with quality indicator F (too unreliable to be published) falls in this category as well. The funnel chart shows CONFIDENTIAL/NOT AVAILABLE with the provincial total sales before January 2004 since the data for subsectors at provincial level are not available for that period.
All industries are classified using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS 2017).
For more information on definitions, data sources and methods, see survey number 2401.
How to use
Instructions to maximize the use of this interactive tool
Use this tool to see the latest released data and the historical data from the Monthly Wholesale Trade Survey (MWTS): seasonally adjusted sales and inventories.
Click to select sales or inventories. The sales or inventories page will appear. On the sales page, choose the period you would like to check by using the date slicer at the left corner of the page. The ten highest sales by industry treemap is updated for to the reference period selected by the user. On the colourful Canada map representing the monthly percentage change by geography, you can click to see the provincial level data. Click on any point outside of the provinces and territories to return to the Canada level details. A historical graph of total sales, in current dollars for provincial level and both current dollars and chained dollars for Canada level, for the last 5 years is updated according to the selected geography.
On the inventories page, choose the period you would like to display by using the date slicer at the left corner of the page. Choose the subsector. You can see the total inventories, monthly change and change in percentage, as well as inventory-to-sales ratio for the selection. A pie chart for inventories by subsector at Canada level will be updated according to the period. A historical graph of sales and inventories for the last 5 years with inventory-to-sales ratio bar is displayed for the selected subsector.
Hover over the bar chart and the line chart to see data points displayed. A quality indicator is present for all the data after January 2004.
