Second Quarter 2010
The New Housing Price Index (1997=100) increased 0.7% in the second
quarter of 2010. The Atlantic Region (+0.8%), Quebec (+0.9%), Ontario
(+0.6%), the Prairie Region (+0.7%) and British Columbia (+0.9%) all posted
increases.
The composite price index for non-residential building construction
increased by 1.4% in the second quarter compared with the previous quarter.
The quarterly increase can be attributed mainly to increases in labour costs
and improved market conditions in the non-residential building construction
market. This was the first quarterly increase since the third quarter of 2008.
The Machinery and Equipment Price Index (MEPI) fell by 0.9% in
the second quarter. The import component fell by 1.3% over this period,
while the domestic component declined by 0.1%. Compared with the second
quarter of 2009, the total MEPI was down by 8.3% in the second quarter,
with the import component falling by 12.2% and the domestic component
declining by 1.5%.
The Electric Utility Construction Price Index costs for distribution
systems increased by 1.0% in first half of 2010 compared with
the 2009 annual index. Higher costs for labour (+4.4%) and overhead
conductors (+7.2%) were the major contributors to the advance.
