Domestic sales of refined petroleum products in January 2013 totalled 7.8 million cubic metres, 507 thousand cubic metres (-5.5%) lower than January the previous year.

Motor gasoline sales totalled 3.0 million cubic metres, 549 thousand cubic metres (-15.6 %) lower than January 2012. Diesel fuel oil sales totalled 2.0 million cubic metres, 242 thousand cubic metres (-10.7 %) lower than a year earlier.

Refinery production in January 2013 totalled 9 million cubic metres, 520 thousand cubic metres (-5.5 %) below January 2012.

Canadian refineries received 8.2 million cubic metres of crude oil, 145 thousand cubic metres (-1.7 %) below January 2012.

Refinery receipts of domestic crude oils totalled 4.5 million cubic metres, 558 thousand cubic metres (-11%) lower than a year earlier.

Crude oil imports totalled 3.7 million cubic metres 414 thousand cubic metres (12.5%) above January 2012. Imports represented 45.2% of total refinery requirements.

OPEC sources led by Algeria and Iraq accounted for 55.3% of foreign supply. Supply from the North Sea, (Norway), accounted for an additional 14.3%.

Crude oil and refined petroleum product inventories held by refineries and major distributors closed January 2013 at 11.2 million cubic metres.

Petroleum product inventories totaled 8.5 million cubic metres.

Most major product categories posted a decrease in inventories. Diesel, propane and butane posted an increase in inventories compared to the close of January 2012.
