Map 1.1 Ecozones, ecoprovinces and marine ecoregions of Canada

Description for Map 1.1

The title of this map is "Terrestrial ecozones and marine ecoregions of Canada." This is a reference map map showing the location of 15 terrestrial ecozones and their component 53 ecoprovinces, as well as 12 marine ecoregions in Canada.

On this map, a solid black line is used to define the ecozone and ecoprovince boundaries. Each ecozone is identified with a unique colour. Ecoprovinces are subdivisions of ecozones and are identified with a unique numeric code.

  • Ecoprovinces numbered 1.1 and 1.2 belong to the Arctic Cordillera ecozone, code 1, and are coloured sky blue.
  • Ecoprovinces numbered 2.1 through 2.7 belong to the Northern Arctic ecozone, code 2, and are coloured dark coral.
  • Ecoprovinces 3.1 through 3.3 belong to the Southern Arctic ecozone, code 3, and are coloured purple-blue.
  • Ecoprovinces 4.1 through 4.3 belong to the Taiga Plains ecozone, code 4, and are coloured green.
  • Ecoprovinces 5.1 through 5.4 belong to the Taiga Shield ecozone, code 5, and are coloured purple.
  • Ecoprovinces 6.1 through 6.6 belong to the Boreal Shield ecozone, code 6, and are coloured khaki.
  • Ecoprovinces numbered 7.1 through 7.3 belong to the Atlantic Maritime ecozone, code 7, and are coloured magenta.
  • Ecoprovinces numbered 8.1 and 8.2 belong to the Mixedwood Plains ecozone, code 8, and are coloured seafoam green.
  • Ecoprovinces numbered 9.1 through 9.3 belong to the Boreal Plains ecozone, code 9, and are coloured pink.
  • Ecoprovinces numbered 10.1 through 10.3 belong to the Prairies ecozone, code 10, and are coloured moss green.
  • Ecoprovinces numbered 11.1 through 11.4 belong to the Taiga Cordillera ecozone, code 11, and are coloured baby pink.
  • Ecoprovinces 12.1 through 12.4 belong to the Boreal Cordillera ecozone, code 12, and are coloured camel.
  • Ecoprovinces numbered 13.1 through 13.3 belong to the Pacific Maritime ecozone, code 13, and are steel blue.
  • Ecoprovinces 14.1 through 14.4 belong to the Montane Cordillera ecozone, code 14, and are coloured dusty rose.
  • Ecoprovinces 15.1 and 15.2 belong to the Hudson Plains ecozone, code 15, are coloured desert brown.

Marine ecoregions are identified in clear blue with grey boundary lines and are labeled to identify the following areas:

  1. Strait of Georgia
  2. Southern Shelf
  3. Offshore Pacific
  4. Northern Shelf
  5. Arctic Basin
  6. Western Arctic
  7. Arctic Archipelago
  8. Eastern Arctic
  9. Hudson Bay Complex
  10. Newfoundland-Labrador Shelves
  11. Scotian Shelf
  12. Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Land areas outside of Canada are coloured light grey. Water is pale blue and major bodies, like oceans, are named.
