Canada's restaurant industry is part of every community: there are more than 97,000 restaurants, bars and caterers across the country.
- $79 billion: The amount of annual sales generated by restaurants, bars and caterers industry in 2019.
- 1.5% of the country’s GDP
- 1.2 million people directly employed in the accommodation and food services sector
- 6.4% of the country's total employment in 2019
- $460 millionNote 1 contributed by restaurateurs to charities in 2018
- $27 billion: The cost of goods sold in 2019, including food and beverage products
- 22 millionNote 2 daily visits to restaurants by Canadians
- 1 in 5 young people between 15 and 24 years were employed in the accommodation and food services sector in 2019
- 22%Note 3 of Canadians worked their first job in the restaurant industry, the highest of any industry
- 273,400 indirect jobs in related industries
