Fields of gold: Canola exports and production

In 2017, Canada produced 21.3 million tonnes of canola.Footnote 1 The majority of canola exports (84.5%) were moved through the Vancouver and Prince Rupert port terminals while over 10% were shipped through the Atlantic Ocean.Footnote 2

Canola exports by city:

  • Prince Rupert, Vancouver: 84.5% of exports (9.8 million tonnes)
  • Thunder Bay, Montréal, Sorel, Halifax: 10.3% of exports (1.2 million tonnes)

Canola production has more than tripled in the last 20 years.Footnote 1 Canada exports close to half of the canola that it produces annually.Footnote 2

Canada's canola exports were valued at $6.5 billion in 2017.Footnote 2

Canola accounted for $10.0 billion in farm cash receiptsFootnote 3 in 2017.

In 2017, canola exports to China alone were almost double the total quantity of canola exported in 1997.
