Economic Events in January CanadaTwo more cases of BSE were confirmed in cows in Alberta, one born after the 1997 ban on feeding animal protein. Quebec increased its tax credit for film and television shows from 11% to 20%. Ontario raised its tax credit for domestic productions to 30% from 20%, and for foreign productions to 18% from 11%. Ontario increased tobacco taxes for the third time in 14 months, raising the price of a carton of cigarettes by $1.25. Western Canada’s largest container terminal became gridlocked due to high volume and harsh winter conditions causing rail and truck transport problems. Production at Suncor Energy’s oil sands operation in Alberta was halved to 110,000 barrels a day due to a fire. Repairs are not expected to be fully completed until the summer. WorldRussia announced it would construct an $11.5 billion (US) oil pipeline from eastern Siberia to the Pacific, choosing a Japanese-proposed route over one that would have favoured exports to China. |
